Review: Sonder Couture by Ligu Stitches: Redefining Elegance

By Rita Okoye

On November 7th, 2024, at the AFAA Runway Showcase in Cape Town, South Africa, Sonder Couture by Ligu Stitches made a debut that was both powerful and unforgettable.

Designed by Adebayo Ajose Olushoto, the Creative Director and Fashion Designer of the brand, the collection seamlessly blended contemporary aesthetics with African artistry. Each piece stood as a statement of individuality and craftsmanship, capturing the essence of modern fashion while honouring cultural heritage.

Sonder Couture celebrated precision, innovation, and creativity. The collection was defined by inventive tailoring, bold silhouettes, and intricate details that highlighted Olushoto’s mastery of design. Every garment seemed to tell a story, reflecting both the designer’s connection to tradition and his vision for the future of fashion.

One of the standout pieces featured a crisp white two-piece ensemble that radiated sophistication. The short-sleeve shirt, adorned with bold square and rectangular patterns in pink, black, brown, and orange, brought vibrancy to the clean white base. Paired with tailored trousers and polished black shoes, the look struck a perfect balance between modern artistry and timeless elegance. This design epitomized Sonder Couture: bold yet refined, innovative yet grounded.

Another memorable look showcased effortless simplicity through a coffee-brown ensemble. While minimal in design, the craftsmanship was impeccable, with every stitch perfectly executed. The sleek tailoring gave the outfit a timeless quality, proving that simplicity, when done with care, can make just as much impact as intricate details. The model’s confident walk enhanced the look, making it an undeniable highlight of the show.
A crisp white ensemble followed, featuring a carefully placed pattern across the chest and side pockets. This subtle but striking detail added personality to the minimalist design, drawing the eye without overwhelming the clean lines of the outfit. Black shoes completed the ensemble, introducing a sharp contrast that elevated the overall look. The result was a harmonious blend of modern flair and classic sophistication.

The collection’s versatility was on full display with a warm cinnamon-brown outfit. The long-sleeved shirt, accented with bronze-brown fabric at the cuffs and neckline, added a pop of contrast that felt both elegant and understated. Paired with loose-fitting trousers, the ensemble offered a relaxed yet polished vibe, ideal for those who value style and comfort in equal measure.

Another standout featured a textured white short-sleeved shirt paired with matching trousers. The shirt was elevated by brown fabric accents at the neckline and a subtle V-shaped detail on the lower side. Wood-brown Chelsea boots added depth and texture, completing the look with a richness that felt earthy and sophisticated. The combination of clean lines, thoughtful details, and warm tones made this piece a true standout.
A bold yet simple black two-piece also made its mark. The short-sleeved shirt featured an X design across the chest, giving the ensemble a touch of intrigue without overcomplicating it. A beaded bracelet added a meaningful nod to African traditions, demonstrating how minimalism can still carry depth and significance. This piece showcased Olushoto’s talent for creating versatile, impactful designs with understated elements.

Sonder Couture by Ligu Stitches was a triumph of boldness, simplicity, and cultural storytelling. Adebayo Ajose Olushoto’s work as Creative Director and Fashion Designer was evident in every detail, from the meticulous tailoring to the thoughtful use of colours and patterns. Each look felt deeply personal yet universally resonant, connecting with the audience on multiple levels.

Olushoto demonstrated his ability to interpret global trends through an African lens, creating designs that are as meaningful as they are beautiful. Sonder Couture was a journey through refinement and creativity, solidifying Ligu Stitches’ place as a force to be reckoned with in the fashion world.
