Why I Love Amsterdam – Victor Iyke

Award-winning Nollywood filmmaker, producer, and director, Victor Iyke, the creative force behind Checkmate Pictures, recently shared his love for a city that sparks his imagination: Amsterdam.

For Iyke, known professionally as Victor Hart, the Dutch capital isn’t just a picturesque destination; it’s a source of inspiration. “Amsterdam is my favourite travel location. I am drawn to the city’s unique charm. The buildings, the canals, and the friendly people are my major attractions. The city’s cleanliness and vibrant nightlife also contribute to its allure,” he noted.

Iyke’s Amsterdam adventures included exploring the iconic canals, some of which served as backdrops for the popular film, The Fault in Our Stars.

He said, “A boat ride through these historic waterways offered a unique perspective of the city. I also experienced Amsterdam’s famed nightlife in the Red Light District and paid a visit to the poignant Anne Frank House.”Beyond the sights, Iyke also savoured the local cuisine. “I tried the Patatje Oorlog, the kroket, and bitterballen, and I enjoyed them,” he shared.

For those planning a trip to Amsterdam, Iyke offers some advice: “Don’t miss visiting the Red Light District or the canals. They are essential experiences for any visitor.”

Looking closer to home, Iyke sees potential for similar development in Nigeria. “I would suggest that the government could transform Lagos Island and Creek Road in Port Harcourt to evoke the same feeling of Amsterdam. These Nigerian locations could become local versions of the captivating European city, blending local flavour with international appeal,” he concluded.
