Olufunke Ajenifuja releases new collection in celebration of World Autism Awareness Day

On April 2, 2025, at the “Stitches for Hope” Autism Awareness Charity Gala held in Lagos, Nigeria, a heartfelt initiative brought together fashion designers, philanthropists, and art lovers to raise funds for autistic children.
Among the standout presentations of the night was the debut of Oludera Atelier’s latest capsule, “Sensory Bloom,” crafted by the brand’s founder, Olufunke Ajenifuja.

The collection comprises a one-sleeved, aquamarine sheath dress that features sheer tulle on the neckline and sleeve, paired with strategically placed 3D floral embroidery and cascading pearl strands from the cold-shoulder cut, hints at sensory stimulation which is a thematic nod that feels honest and not ornamental. This dress showcases solid manipulation of negative space, especially in the asymmetrical neckline and curved seam placements. There is precise dart positioning that contours the bust, though the points of measure could have been better balanced, particularly around the upper arm and side bodice. While the floral appliqués and pearls are tastefully selected, the attachment method lacks uniformity; some pearls dangle inconsistently, which compromises the tactile elegance that the design initially promises.

Another piece in the collection is the crimson satin gown with an exaggerated off-shoulder neckline trimmed with yellow organza florals. The use of yellow organza floral ruffles along the off-shoulder neckline evokes both growth and sensory bloom, an apt metaphor for the collection’s title. The ruching along the bodice offers a forgiving fit for varying bust sizes, while the floor-length draped satin skirt glides into a side slit that teeters on risqué.
The measurement points here are more refined. The bust and hip alignments seem deliberate, with well-executed shaping around the waist that suggests more refined manipulation at the block drafting stage. However, the execution stumbles again at the back panel, where visible bubbling in the train suggests poor pressing or an uneven application of interfacing.
This small but significant construction flaw detracts from an otherwise graceful piece.
The choice of duchess satin for this dress allows the outfit to sculpt on the wearer’s body and not collapse. Labels and finishing include size tags and a properly attached care label, suggesting evolving brand maturity. Overall, “Sensory Bloom” injects personality and courage into Oludera Atelier’s body of work and introduces her as a designer concerned with narrative, not just form. The garments will likely appeal to avant-garde dressers, editorial stylists, and socially conscious fashion consumers. Olufunke Ajenifuja’s potential is visible and her voice but to mature as a fashion technician, she must invest equal energy in the invisible craftsmanship that undergirds surface beauty.
