Makeup Storage 101: Guide to keep Your Products Fresh
By Yemisi Suleiman
Proper storage of your makeup products can significantly extend their shelf life and maintain their effectiveness. By following a few storage tips, you can help ensure that your makeup products remain effective and safe to use for as long as possible, promoting both your beauty routine and skin health.

Here are some tips on how to store your makeup correctly:
1. Keep It Cool and Dry
Store makeup in a cool environment. Avoid areas that experience temperature fluctuations, such as near windows or heaters, consider a bedroom or a dedicated makeup drawer.
2. Avoid Direct Sunlight
Keep makeup away from direct sunlight, as UV rays can degrade ingredients and alter the product’s effectiveness. Use opaque containers or store products in a drawer to minimise light exposure.
3. Use Proper Containers
Sealed Containers: Ensure that all products are tightly sealed after use. This prevents air from entering and causing oxidation or drying out. Whenever possible, keep products in their original packaging, as it is designed to protect them.
4. Organise Your Makeup
Makeup Organiser: Use a makeup organiser or storage box to keep products neatly arranged. This helps you find what you need quickly and prevents products from getting damaged.
5. Avoid Contamination
Clean Tools: Regularly clean your makeup brushes, sponges, and applicators to prevent bacteria buildup. Use brush cleaners or mild soap and water.
6. No Fingers
Avoid using your fingers to apply products directly from the container, as this can introduce bacteria. Use clean brushes or applicators instead.
7. Check Expiration Dates
Be aware of the expiration dates on your products. Many products have a symbol on the packaging indicating how long they are good for after opening (usually represented as a jar with a number followed by “M” for months).
8. Regular Purge:
Periodically go through your makeup collection to discard any expired or unused products.
9. Store Products Upright
Store products upright whenever possible. This prevents spills and keeps products from leaking or drying out.
