Nubi Mohammed: The Quiet Disruptor of Nigeria’s Unisex Fashion Scene

November 2,2025

Nubi Mohammed is a quiet disruptor in the Nigerian fashion scene, which is getting more and more colourful. Maximalist aesthetics and bold cultural declarations are often at the centre of the conversation.

Afsat Nubi Mohammed started the brand and is in charge of its creative direction. It is known for making unisex clothing that pushes the limits of traditional gender roles while staying true to Nigerian cultural expression.

What makes Nubi Mohammed stand out is that it doesn’t follow the predictable shapes and flashy decorations that are common in modern African fashion. Instead, the brand embraces a simple style and looks at how structure, comfort, and tailoring can all work together in the same piece of clothing.

The end result is a visual language with clean lines, balanced proportions, and a functional minimalism that appeals to a new generation of Nigerians who want more than just a show.

This lack of style is not a weakness; it’s the brand’s strongest asset. Each collection is like a quiet protest, saying that Nigerian fashion can be simple, intellectual, and self-reflective.
BlackFest Cultural Fashion Week, Liverpool Uk, Lagos Fashion Week, and GTBank Fashion Weekend, Nubi Mohammed’s steady rise is shown by the fact that it is on some of the most famous runways in the country.

At Lagos Fashion Week, the brand showed that it understood how to make clothes that could be worn by anyone without losing their personality or style. The pieces were simple but well-made, which set the brand apart from louder, more theatrical ones.

The brand’s presence at GTBank Fashion Weekend, which is known for highlighting designers with strong commercial viability, further solidified its growing importance. Here, Afsat’s pieces stood out for their refined practicality, designs that were not only beautiful on the runway but also useful in real life.

Most recently, Nubi Mohammed was chosen to close the fashion show at BlackFest Cultural Week. This was a big sign of how far the brand has come artistically. The presentation combined unisex tailoring with stories from different cultures, making the brand seem both modern and culturally aware. It was a time that showed not only participation but also power.
A designer with a unique voice

Afsat Nubi Mohammed has an intellectual precision in design that is not common among new Nigerian designers. She is especially good at taking apart traditional shapes and putting them back together in a more modern way. Working with fabrics, from soft cottons to structured indigenous weaves. Making clothes that are gender-neutral without using gimmicks and instead relying on proportion, cut, and planned drape.

Finding a balance between telling stories from different cultures and being modern in the world today. Her design philosophy makes her part of the growing group of African artists who are
A brand like Nubi Mohammed that seems promising makes people think and praise it. Consistency in both the idea and the execution across several collections

A careful use of textures and fabrics that doesn’t rely on stereotypes of African fashion
Runway shows that show off the brand’s potential as an editorial and commercial brand
Critical observations: The brand could use more research into new textiles, especially eco-friendly ones, to add to its creative vocabulary.

A minimalist style is a plus, but adding more story to each collection would make them more emotional and make the runway more powerful. A stronger accessories or lifestyle part could help the brand’s identity and presence in stores. These criticisms are not flaws, but chances for a brand that is clearly growing to take the next steps.

As Nigerian fashion becomes more important around the world, brands like Nubi Mohammed will help shape how people see modern African design. Afsat is one of the most promising designers to come out of Nigeria today. She is committed to unisex fashion and has a strong technical background and cultural knowledge.

Nubi Mohammed isn’t just selling clothes; he’s also adding to a bigger conversation about identity, fluidity, and modern African style. As the brand grows, improves, and pushes the limits of Nigerian fashion, it is set to become a major voice in the future of global unisex design.
