Cultural sites to visit in Southwest this festive season

★Lekki Conservation Centre

More than just a park, LCC is a vibrant ecosystem teeming with lush vegetation and wildlife. Home to diverse species, including playful monkeys, it provides a rare moment of tranquillity.

Its crown jewel is Africa’s longest Canopy Walkway, an engineering marvel that offers stunning views of the verdant landscape below.

The LCC is not just a place; it is a breath of fresh perspective in Lagos’ dynamic world. It is not just a place of natural beauty; it is where you will find the tree houses that offer breathtaking views of the vibrant ecosystem below.

Swampy terrain and tropical habitats that invite a variety of creatures, from colourful fishes to elusive reptiles, creating a delicate balance that reminds one what clean air, unspoiled landscapes, and thriving ecosystems truly mean.

If you find yourself in Lagos this festive season and you are longing for tranquillity or an eco-adventure, Lekki Conservation Centre is calling.

★Idanre Hills

Ondo State is surrounded by hills, and it is a four-hour drive from Lagos.
The State, known for its many hills and mountains, has one prominent hill that has become very popular, and that is the Idanre Hill.
This is a series of hills that hold cultural and spiritual significance for the Idanre people.
The Idanre hill is a 667 steep hill which has, over the years, attracted both locals, foreign tourists, and religious groups because of the mysteries surrounding it.
Planning to visit Idanre Hill? It is advisable to go with comfortable shoes and clothes to aid your climb and make it enjoyable.

★Erin-Ijesha Waterfalls

Erin-Ijesha Waterfalls, an assemblage of seven distinct cascades, is a tourist attraction located in Oriade Local Government Area, Osun State.
It is believed by people of Erin-Ijesa that the waterfalls exude from a big pot located at the top of the ridge. The waterfall is a whole new, exciting and awe-inspiring experience with nature. Each step of the waterfall has a flowing fountain that marks the mystical nature of the place.

The water flows among rocks and splashes down with great force on the evergreen vegetation around. The breeze at the waterfalls is cool and refreshing. The whole scenery is fascinating and idyllic.
Visitors are advised to go along with a sunhat, bathing suit or whatever swim attire you prefer as well as some sunscreen to protect your skin from the burning sun.

★Osun-Osogbo sacred groove

A United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation, UNESCO, World Heritage site in Osogbo, the Osun sacred groove is dedicated to the goddess of fertility.
Known for being one of the last remnants of primary high forest in southern Nigeria and a cultural landscape, the grove features shrines, sculptures, and art created over centuries, and it holds significant importance as a symbol of Yoruba identity and a testament to the historical practice of creating sacred groves.

The site is open to visitors, who can explore it with a guide to learn about its history and significance.
Entrance fees typically apply, and there may be separate fees for mobile and digital cameras.

★Olumo Rock

Olumo Rock is one of the major tourist attractions in the southwest with a captivating embodiment. Located in Abeokuta, this rock was a fortress for the Egba people and is a popular tourist destination with historical significance.
One thing stands out in particular: the blessings of nature.
Visiting Olumo Rock attracts gate fee that vary with children and adults. as well as for tourists who wish to use the elevator.

★Ikogosi Warm Spring

Situated in Ekiti State is an amazing warm and cold water spring known as Ikogosi Warm Spring, a five-hour journey from Lagos and 45 minutes from Akure, the capital of Ondo State.
Ikogosi warm spring is a mysterious warm and cold water spring that flows side by side without the cold or warm water losing its thermal density. At the source, the warm water has a temperature of 70c and after it comes in contact with the cold water, it reduces to 37c.
It is believed among the locals that the spring has a curative power, and a sort of therapeutic effect that cures body aches and other ailments when one comes in contact with the water.
