WHEN A MISSED FLIGHT BECOMES AN ADVENTURE

By Joy Agbakoba (Queen of Cruise)

Sometimes, life has a way of changing our plans — and occasionally, those unexpected changes turn out to be gifts.
I was travelling from London to Lagos when I missed my connecting flight in Doha. At first, it was frustrating. But rather than allow the disappointment to take over, I decided to make the most of my unexpected 24 hours in Doha.
And I got organised quickly.

Right there at the airport, I booked a room at the beautiful and modern Hyatt Regency Oryx Doha, conveniently located just about 15 minutes from Hamad International Airport. I also arranged a private tour guide for the evening.
That guide was Mohammed.

Discovering Doha
Mohammed was fantastic. Extremely knowledgeable about Doha’s history, culture, food and traditions, he had a wonderful way of bringing the city to life.
Our private tour ran from 6pm to 10pm, giving me the perfect opportunity to experience Doha after dark.
We visited the museums and explored Souq Waqif, experiencing the wonderful contrast between traditional Doha and the sophisticated modern city.
We then visited Place Vendôme in Lusail — a spectacular French-inspired shopping destination and, without exaggeration, the largest mall I have ever visited. The scale, architecture and elegance were simply breathtaking.
From there, we continued to The Pearl Island, where I saw the magnificent Raffles Hotel and experienced another side of Doha’s luxury and sophistication.

When Doha Comes Alive
But it was at night that Doha really captured me.
Driving along the Corniche, surrounded by magnificent skyscrapers and beautifully illuminated buildings, the city seemed to transform.
Doha sparkles at night. The architecture, lights and reflections across the waterfront created a spectacular panorama — completely different from the Doha I had seen during the day.
Then came the boat ride, giving me the chance to see the illuminated skyline from the water. It was one of those moments when you simply sit back, look around and appreciate where you are.
There was something particularly special about experiencing the city this way. I wasn’t rushing through an airport or simply passing through on a cruise excursion. For a few precious hours, I was able to slow down and experience Doha at my own pace. The combination of its rich heritage, extraordinary architecture, warm hospitality and vibrant nightlife made the city feel both familiar and completely new to me.
And perhaps that is what made the experience so memorable. I had not planned any of this. There was no carefully prepared itinerary, no advance booking and no expectation of spending the evening exploring Doha. Yet somehow, everything came together perfectly.
By the end of the evening, I realised something quite remarkable.
Although I had visited Doha before during a cruise excursion, that first visit had been brief. These unexpected 24 hours allowed me to see far more of the city than I had seen on my first visit.
My flight back to Lagos was at 7:20am the following morning, so after four wonderful hours exploring Doha, it was time to return to the hotel, rest and prepare for the journey home.

The Unexpected Gift
What began as a missed connection became an unforgettable little adventure. It reminded me that sometimes, the things that disappoint us in the moment can lead us somewhere wonderful — if we are willing to embrace the unexpected.
“I missed my flight, but I gained 24 hours in Doha.”
And perhaps that’s the real lesson:
From every disappointment, we can choose to create a positive ending.
Sometimes, life simply has a different itinerary planned for us.
