How to support skin health during menopause
By Josephine Agbonkhese
Menopause doesn’t just affect your hormones; it changes your skin too. As estrogen levels decline, collagen production slows, skin becomes thinner, oil glands produce less sebum, and the skin barrier weakens. The result is often dryness, dullness, fine lines, loss of firmness, and a complexion that no longer looks as plump or radiant as it once did. These shifts are completely normal, yet they can feel frustrating. The good news is that thoughtful daily habits and targeted care can meaningfully support skin health and help restore a healthy glow throughout menopause and beyond.
Hydrate From Inside and Out
Start with hydration both inside and out. Drink plenty of water and include moisture-rich foods such as cucumbers, berries, and leafy greens. On the skin, choose a gentle, non-foaming cleanser that does not strip natural oils. Follow immediately with a hydrating serum containing hyaluronic acid to draw water into the skin, then lock it in with a rich moisturiser packed with ceramides, glycerin, or squalane. These ingredients help repair the compromised barrier and reduce transepidermal water loss that leaves skin looking flat and tired.
Choose Supportive Ingredients
Incorporate ingredients that encourage renewal without irritation. A low-strength retinoid or bakuchiol can gently stimulate collagen, while niacinamide helps improve barrier function, even out tone, and calm redness. Antioxidants such as vitamin C or green-tea extract protect against free-radical damage and brighten the complexion. Introduce actives slowly and always buffer them with moisturiser if your skin feels sensitive.
Never Skip Sun Protection
Daily sun protection remains non-negotiable. Thinner menopausal skin is more vulnerable to UV damage, which accelerates collagen breakdown and pigmentation. Apply a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher every morning, even on cloudy days, and reapply when outdoors. Mineral formulas containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide tend to be gentler on reactive skin.
Lifestyle Habits That Boost Glow
Lifestyle choices amplify topical efforts. Prioritise sleep, as overnight repair is when skin recovers most effectively. Manage stress through walking, yoga, or breathing exercises, since elevated cortisol can worsen inflammation and dryness. Eat foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids and colourful antioxidants to support skin from within. Regular movement improves circulation, delivering nutrients that keep the complexion looking fresh
