One of the less discussed aspects of marriage is sexual contentment. We talk about sexual compatibility, satisfaction and keeping the spark alive, but we rarely ask a simpler question: can we genuinely be contented with the person we married, including the body that person has?

Marriage brings two human beings together, not two perfect bodies frozen in time, the body you admired when you met your spouse will inevitably change. Pregnancy may alter a woman’s shape, age may change the firmness and appearance of the body, weight may fluctuate, and men too experience changes in their bodies as the years go by; they are part of being human.

Practising sexual contentment means learning to appreciate your spouse’s body rather than constantly comparing it with an imagined ideal. This includes the physical features that may not conform to what society, pornography or social media has taught us to consider attractive like the breasts, buttocks, stomachs, body size, height and even intimate anatomy.
Not every man’s body looks the same, and not every woman’s body looks the same, there is no single standard against which every spouse should be measured.

This is particularly important because sexual confidence is fragile: when a husband repeatedly criticises his wife’s body, or a wife makes her husband feel inadequate because of his physical features, the damage may extend beyond the bedroom, as a spouse who feels physically judged by the one partner with whom they should feel most accepted may gradually become self-conscious about intimacy.

Contentment does not mean that your spouse must remain physically identical to the person you married, it means developing the maturity to appreciate the person in front of you rather than constantly longing for a different body. After all, the same changes happening to your spouse are happening to you too.
There’s also something beautiful about becoming familiar with your spouse’s changing body over the years, the body may no longer look exactly as it did when the relationship began, but it belongs to the person with whom you have built a life, shared experiences and created memories. That familiarity can itself become part of sexual intimacy.

One of the salient disciplines of marriage is learning to say, sincerely, “I am contented with my spouse.” Not because their body is perfect, but because we have stopped demanding perfection from the person we love. You married a person, not a permanent body specification. Contentment is learning to appreciate the person and the body that comes with the marriage!
