P-Square to get Glo’s axe as ambassadors
By Tofarati Ige
The long romance between heavyweight telecommunications company, Globacom, and one of their celebrity brand ambassadors, P-Square is about to come to an end, if information at Potpourri’s disposal is anything to go by.
P-Square, made up of twin brothers, Peter and Paul, was signed by Glo in 2010 with an alleged mouth-watering contract fee of N60m per year. Even when the telecoms brand had dropped other ambassadors in the past, P-Square had always been seen as some sort of untouchables.
However, P-Square’s incessant family squabbles and dramas in the past year have put a strain on their relationship with Glo. According to the company’s source who craved anonymity, the recurrent media episodes in which the brothers took themselves to the cleaners on social media have sullied their brand image. It should be recalled that Peter had recently publicly denounced their elder brother, Jude ‘Engees’ Okoye as their manager. He also once stated that he was done with P-Square and would be a solo artiste.
Officials of Glo also alleged that the brothers ‘misbehaved’ during the ‘Dance With Peter’ reality competition that was held in 2015. This is reportedly why the competition wasn’t renewed for a second season.
Even though the brothers recently made up again and promised to have put all their differences aside, this is not enough to persuade the company to keep them. P-Square’s newest song, ‘Bank Alert’ is also said not to be getting the traction expected of artistes of their status.
Glo hasn’t formally announced their separation from Glo, but our sources tell us that it’s only a formality at this point.
It should be recalled that Glo has dropped acts like D’banj, Kunle Afolayan, Ego, among others in the past. Another major telco, MTN also unloaded many of its brand ambassadors like Kcee, Harrysong, Don Jazzy, Tiwa Savage etc, on account of the poor economic condition of the country.
