Women have been advised to shelve being over-dependent on their men as a way of cubbing the rising spate of domestic violence in the society.

Mrs. Ngozi Ogbolu, Chairperson International Federation of Women Lawyers Nigeria, (FIDA), Lagos State branch, gave this advice at a press briefing marking the associations’ national law week.
The theme of the annual week was “Women Empowerment, a panacea for sustainable national development.”
Mrs. Ogbolu noted that for there to be national development, both genders must be alive and work together for progress. She decried the rising cases of women killing their husbands, which is currently trending.
The killings, she opined, arise from pent-up anger, emotional, physical and verbal abuse, which some of these women may have endured over time.
She called on the government to put legislation in place to disallow subtle rules that regulates the women in the background.
In her words: “FIDA is worried about the reported rising cases of killings of spouses, especially, women now killing their husbands. It is taking a dangerous trend.
“Domestic violence knows not the educated or illiterate, religion or free thinkers, carrier women or even the trader, stay-at-home wives or singles.”
As a way stemming these trend, she said: “Don’t have too many expectations from your husband, make yourself happy, socialization is very important and get empowered, economically.”
Others are “reading the Holy Book, taking care of their health, getting involved in recreational activities, opening up and discussing issues that may be affecting them and seeking counseling services from professionals.
This year’s annual FIDA Law week saw members offering free legal counseling to some women who had marital issues and need legal services,
