How to prepare your hair for a protective style

One style many women prefer to wear during the rainy months is the protective style.

A protective style is a hairstyle that can protect the hair for a while without the need to re-style the hair for a while. It helps your hair to grow longer and healthier hair just by reducing split ends and knotting.

From braids, Bantu knots, wigs, cornrows, crochet braids, to fixing of weaves, these are common examples.

These styles can be worn for four to six weeks.

Protective style is a great way to retain length by putting less stress on your natural hair. It allows the hair to breathe and promotes hair growth.

According to Daniel Komlan, Head of Technician Unit, Natures Gentle Touch Hair Institute (NGTHI), there are routines you must take before opting for the protective hair-do.

According to him, cleanse deep conditioning and moisturising the hair.

Cleansing:

Ensure that you take out all the dirt and remove any build-up from the styling products that might be left on my hair, by using a sulphate-free clarifying shampoo.

Deep condition

Komlan says, “It is important to apply a generous amount of deep conditioner after cleansing your hair. Choose a moisture rich deep conditioner to add back the moisture. Cover your hair with a plastic cap and let it sit for 15-20 minutes or go under the steamer for 10 minutes.”

Moisturise

“Apply a leave-in serum to moisturise your hair. This helps to helps hair to be manageable and ensure less breakage. It also improves hair elasticity.”

“You also need rich moisturising products and a butter to seal in the moisture for weekly maintainace,” Komlan said.
