Allure Awards 2018: Actress of the year – Sola Sobowale

Actress, screenwriter, producer and director, Sola Sobowale was born in Ondo State, on December 26, 1965.

Sola initially enrolled as a Secretary in training at Sight & Sound, Ibadan, but Tunji Oyelana, (Sura Di Tailor) who married her elder sister, Kikelomo, got her enrolled in the University of Ibadan’s Department of Music.

When she didn’t get her fulfilment rocking the microphone, she eventually opted for the thespian art. From rested ‘Village Headmaster’ to Lola Fani Kayode’s ‘Mirror In The Sun’, and a couple of stage productions including Femi Osofisan’s ‘Our Husband Has Gone Mad Again’, it was a steady rise for her.

She also scored more credits in a long list of Yoruba movies, after she made debut in 1992 in the film, ‘Asewo to re Mecca’ and ‘Eri Okan’. She has since then appeared in close to 100 movies.

Over the years, she had scripted, co-scripted, directed and produced several Nigerian films.

Sola was the famous ‘Toyin Tomato’ of TV drama, ‘Super Story’ by Wale Adenuga.
Dramatic, vibrant, captivating, she is everything one could wish for in a movie character.

The 53-year-old mother of a set of twins, took a long break from the movie industry when she left Nigeria to live a quiet life in Britain for a couple of years.

However, in 2016, she made a full return into Nollywood, when she starred in Mo Abudu- produced, blockbuster movie, ‘The Wedding Party’.

Her profile keeps soaring. And it does appear she has only herself to beat. Her role in Kemi Adetiba’s highly successful film, ‘King of Boys’ is currently, the talk of the town.

Sola Sobowale has won several awards for her prowess in the make-believe world of movies.
