Court allegedly orders arrest of Monalisa Chinda over tax evasion
An Igbosere High Court in Lagos, has reportedly issued a warrant, for the arrest of Nollywood actress and producer, Monalisa Chinda-Coker, for tax evasion.
Presiding judge, Justice Adedayo Akintoye gave the order on January 21, following an application by the Lagos State Ministry of Justice accusing the screen diva of repeatedly failing to honor court summons.
The 44-year-old actress is facing a two-count charge of failing to file annual tax returns and pay income tax for her company, Monalisa Code Production, over a six-year period.
““The defendant has been served with hearing notice. The proof of service is in the court’s file,” a statement from prosecutor Y.A Pitan reads. The counsel mentioned this while asking for a bench warrant to arrest the actress who has reportedly been evasive.
Monalisa Chinda is alleged to be found wanting for refusing to fulfill an obligation to pay tax to the Lagos State government for her business located in Lekki on the Lagos Island.
The 2-count charge, one of which alleged “failure to furnish and file annual tax returns for the purpose of personal income taxation with the Lagos State Internal Revenue Service (LIRS) contrary to Section 94(1) of the Personal Income.
The bench warrant to arrest the actress extends till April, having failed to appear in court since the charge was filed.
