6 things Omawunmi shared with Mercy Johnson-Okojie about marriage

Singer Omawumi is the latest guest on Nollywood actress, Mercy Johnson-Okojie’s show, Mercy’s Kitchen.

The actress launched a talk show, where she invites fellow celebrities to talk about their lifestyle, their opinion on life issues and their intimate secrets while cooking.

On the latest episode, Mercy and Omawumi talked about marriage.

Below are the six things we got from their conversation.

On if marriage has changed her in any way

I feel like motherhood has done the more changing but matrimony too has helped. I’m enjoying it.

On how she settles disputes

We talk it out. We talk everything out. I had issues before with communicating because my husband is a very self-respecting person and he also tries to exude that nature and extends that to other people. He doesn’t do what he doesn’t want to be done to him and I was taught to understand that sometimes you just have to communicate this things and it boils down to your approach about communicating.

On the biggest lesson she has learnt about marriage

We have to be in it together because I tend to be more of an individual; I tend to be more into my own space and sometimes he doesn’t get it.

On how she would react if her husband cheats

My in-laws are my friends. If they know that my husband is cheating, I don’t expect them to tell me but to educate my husband about the wrong he’s doing because if they tell me, I will kill him. But if I ever know that he cheated, I won’t leave my marriage because of that one error. It’s not a good way to do these things. Marriage is a partnership. Na two of us dey inside. So, what you would not want me to do to you, don’t do it to me. I won’t leave my marriage but we will talk about the issue.

But we have never found ourselves in such situation. We are pretty young in the marriage. We had a daughter seven years ago and I’ve been married for four years now and I’m enjoying.

On finances

I prefer a couple having a joint account with a woman having her own personal account.

On who a couple should talk to when they have issues

They should talk to a neutral person. Not even their pastor. I go to church and I love my pastor but everybody’s marriage is not the same. Go for counseling.
