Best practices for overcoming addictions
Overcoming an addiction is no easy task and knowing the best practices to overcoming it helps smoothing the process.
Earlier this year, I resolved to tick a particular goal which I’ve left lingering for over a decade and
Everyday the distractions we overcome simply to get things done is a lot.
This includes friends, television series, activities, colleagues, and a whole lot of others.
But the most distracting of them all is Our addiction to phones and social media.
Just a little peep on the media is enough to keep you bounded and before you know , it’s two(2) hours later and a warning in my case for excess data usage.
Before now I will keep my mobile phone at a place and will be like, I’m not touching this phone for the next one hour.
Truth is, I see myself close to the phone in less than 5 minutes and after a while I will yield to it.
Resolving to be focused led to uninstalling my facebook.
It was a hard decision but I did and stayed about a week without seeing any notifications on my phone.
I felt sick and missing out on important posts from some persons that enrich my soul.
That thought and feeling became my distraction and I see myself thinking about it all the time.
This prevented me from doing the supposed task that made me take the decision.
Finally I resolved it when a thought came to me.
‘Complete withdrawal is not the best way to tackle an addiction’.
The best way to actually overcome an addiction is as follow.
¤¤¤ Firstly you need to Identify the very addictive act that’s making you perform below your expected goal.
¤¤¤Take a conscious decision and be ready to adhere, they say if you lie you die, if you tell the truth you die.
What do you do in that situation?
Think critically and choose your hard.
¤¤¤Practice withdrawal and channel your attention to the goal or task right in front of you. To achieve this, Intentionality will play a very important role as there will be need to silence all the noise around and choose only the best and more impacting noise.(Yes there is an impacting noise) If you know you know.
Not everything deserves your attention, if you must be distracted let it be something that will impact you positively ,thereby taking you to a whole new level.
¤¤¤ Learn to be focused despite the distraction by constantly putting the goal right in front of you. Your goals should constantly be at a place where you can see it at all time ,that’s the essence of a vision board. You need to see it at all time till its ticked.
¤¤¤Finally being disciplined . “Discipline is the bridge between dreams and accomplishments” Jim Rohn.
If you truly want to achieve a thing or to remain absolutely focused, you need to be disciplined to the core and that was the lesson I learnt.
I reinstalled Facebook app after and disciplines myself more on limiting my distraction.
Hope you adopt this practices to tackle addictions that are limiting your productivity.
What addiction are you battling with at the moment?
Hope this helps you come out of it.
