Britney Spears Asks Court To Remove Father’s Control Over Personal Life

An American singer-songwriter, Britney Spears, has asked a court to end her father’s strict control over many aspects of her life and career.

Jamie Spears, who has been his daughter’s legal conservator for 12 years, had temporarily stepped aside from the role in 2019, citing health problems, but was due to resume the role this year.

According to BBC, legal documents filed with the superior court of California, Los Angeles have revealed that “Britney is strongly opposed to James’ return as a conservator of her person.”

It stated that she now favours a role she said had “rescued her from a collapse, exploitation and financial ruin” while also making her “able to regain her position as a world-class entertainer”.

Britney asked that Jodi Montgomery, her manager who had replaced by her father, to permanently oversee her affairs once the conservatorship is up for extension after August 22.

“We are now at a point where the conservatorship must be changed substantially in order to reflect the major changes in her current lifestyle and her stated wishes,” the court documents read in part.

The 38-year-old singer, who last performed live in October 2018 before canceling a 2019 residency, has not controlled her financial or career decisions since 2008 due to the court-enacted agreement.

Britney’s father and attorney have managed her assets and personal life, including being able to restrict her visitors and communicate with doctors about her treatment for mental health issues.

She had begun behaving erratically back in 2007 after her divorce from Kevin Federline, her ex-husband, and later lost custody of their two children, although she’s allowed frequent visits.
