The NBA announced on Tuesday that former US President Barack Obama has joined the NBA Africa as a strategic partner, boosting social responsibility activities across the continent.

Obama will support initiatives and partnerships that promote economic equality and participation for women.

According to the league, Obama will own a tiny interest in the new company, which he plans to utilize to finance Obama Foundation youth and leadership initiatives across Africa over time. NBA Africa manages the league’s operations in Africa, increasing market recognition and interaction with fans while also boosting the game’s social responsibility programs.

The NBA has always been a great ambassador for the United States—using the game to create deeper connections around the world, and in Africa, basketball has the power to promote opportunity, wellness, equality, and empowerment across the continent,” Obama said in a statement.
