Golden House of Fab: A Fashion Editor’s Perspective
By Yemisi Suleiman
I recently came across a collection by Nigeria’s indigenous brand- Golden House of Fab, owned by Iwuji Golden Oluchi. The collection, which combines traditional and modern styles and is rich in African aesthetics, drew my attention as a fashion editor with more than ten years of experience. It consists of traditional Nigerian blouses worn with wrappers or wrap skirts made of heavy silk George fabrics, primarily for church, weddings, and other formal events. An off-the-shoulder blouse with 3D ruffles on both sleeves and colours of peach, coral, and red is one particularly striking style. The waist of the corset has a peplum flare design. An exquisitely tied headpiece (gele) in a shimmering coral orange completed the ensemble for the ideal appearance.

Strengths
The designer’s ability to combine global and African influences demonstrates her inventiveness. For example, the thigh-high slit black asymmetric dress is a real show-stopper, stylish, adaptable, and suitable for any occasion. In a similar vein, the off-the-shoulder floral print dress effectively blends the two cultures, creating a look that is both regional and global. Her audacious use of colour contrasts is what makes her strong. The outfits stand out thanks to the striking contrast between the black and the vibrant coral and peach. The accessories are well-coordinated without overpowering the blouse, and the gele is exquisitely tied and matches the blouse’s colour scheme.

Areas of Improvement
A closer examination, however, identifies a few executional errors. For instance, the black asymmetric dress has some noticeable areas, that could be adjusted for a more classy output. Additionally, some of the blouse-and-wrapper ensembles seem overly busy. The off-shoulder blouse somewhat overpowers the ensemble with its combination of striking colours, patterns, peplum, and eye-catching ruffles. The collection could have benefitted more by reducing some of the details, such as by choosing smaller ruffles. A wider range of looks and outfit variations would have added depth to the designer’s creativity.

Conclusion
Despite the shortcomings, the collection is striking, vibrant, and unmistakably Nigerian, yet it carries a universal appeal. It radiates confidence, elegance, and artistry. We eagerly anticipate the brand’s evolution, which is already unfolding at an impressive pace. With her remarkable ability to interpret patterns, masterful colour coordination, and creative prowess, Golden House of Fab is poised to make an even greater impact both locally and internationally. The future holds a magnificent new height for the brand.
