AFRIMA receives 20,000 petition to disqualify Brymo over hate speech against ‘Ndi Igbo’

The All Africa Music Awards, AFRIMA, have received more than 20,000 signatures requesting that Olawale Oloforo, alias Brymo, be disqualified from winning his category, “Songwriter of the Year,” due to his divisive comments regarding the Igbo people.

Just last night, the petition had surpassed the 9,000 signature threshold. Over 20,000 individuals have already signed the petition, surpassing the original target of 10,000.

A petition against the singer was started by a Twitter user, Charles Ogundele last week.

Brymo was targeted in the petition for what it said were his hateful remarks directed towards “Ndi Igbos”.

In a multicultural country like Nigeria, Brymo’s remark, according to Ogundele, may sow division and hostility.

The crooner was characterized as an ethnic bigot in the petition titled “Stop Brymo from winning the All Africa Music Award for Song Writer of the Year.”

According to the petition, the singer would receive a clear message if he didn’t win the prize.

The petition reads; “Brymo recently put up a series of hateful messages on Twitter toward the Igbo tribe of Nigeria, going as far as retweeting a tweet which said that all Igbos are senseless. In one of his tweets, he wrote “fuck omo Igbo”, which translates to “fuck the Igbo people,” it reads.

“His actions are ones which spark disunity and hatred in a multicultural nation that Nigeria is. Preventing him from winning the All Africa Music Award would send a strong message to him, and people like him, that he can’t get away with such blatant ethnic bigotry.”

The award presentation is scheduled to take place on the 15th of January.

The 36-year-old experienced severe opposition recently after asserting that the Igbo tribe is not eligible to become President yet.

The artist has, however, continued to attack the Igbo people in a subsequent Twitter tweet.

He tweetd; “F**k The Ndi Igbo!! ..To Hell With It!! Well I know many Igbo people…and reality looks awry in them…”
