FASHION REVIEW: REDEFINING MODERN AFRICAN WOMENSWEAR

By Yemisi Suleiman
Fashion becomes complete only when it’s fun, has comfort and is meaningful. It goes beyond what we wear. It also involves how we express ourselves, where we come from, and what we stand for. We all want to look good, wearing something that speaks loudly. However, not many fashion brands have the capacity to make this a reality.

And that’s where the Chrispe brand comes in! Chrispe was founded by Christian Danquah in 2020. It is well known for making stylish and comfortable clothes that care about the environment.

In 2023, the brand introduced its 2023 collections that merge culture, creativity, and class.
Without wasting much time, let’s take a look at some of the promising designs from the collection.

The first dress from the Chrispe 2023 collection is a strong piece that brings together structure and style. The dress is introduced with a sweet-looking cropped jacket that sits properly on the model’s body. The collar and the button below give the dress a sharp and serious look, making it look like a uniform. The fabric is shiny like satin, and it catches the light beautifully. It also gives the outfit a soft glow, blending well with the model’s skin tone. This adds to the calm mood of the look.

The design on the skirt is where things get more playful and interesting. It is well crafted and balloons from the waist, which creates a dramatic shape that brings more energy to the entire look of the dress. It stops just below the knees, giving enough space for the beautiful shoes to show off.

One interesting effect on the dress is the big pockets on both sides that give the entire dress a streetwear vibe and polished look. This effect also gives an edge. It is not just pretty, but bold and strong.

Looking at how the dress fits, the outfit hugs the body of the wearer at the right parts of the body, just where it should. The top is also fitted and neat, while the lower part gives room and drama. The long sleeves complete the design by balancing the width of the skirt to give a thoughtful design.

From the colour, the cut, how shiny it is, and the mood of the dress all work together. Everything feels modern and rooted in African culture.

As beautiful as this dress is, it is without challenges and recommendations. Even though the fabric is classic, it might be very heavy or too warm for everyday wear, especially in a hot continent like Africa. A lighter one would be better to fit all kinds of skin tone and weather.

The pockets are another effect that needs to be taken into consideration. Even though fashion is sometimes exaggerated, the pockets are large and too open. On some body types, they could make the hips wider or smaller to help keep the design flattering.
The balloon shape may not be comfortable for everyone with that much volume. It may also not suit all wearers because of the size of the upper part of the dress. Adding a straight flared skirt could make the dress more versatile for more people to enjoy.
With these few points and recommendations, the dress has a place in the fashion market. It is stylish, eye-catching and passes a message. What Chrispe has done here is pure creativity and a good understanding of how fashion can be mixed with new ideas.
Indeed, this is a masterpiece.

Right from the first look, this dress calls for attention with its soft pink colour and unexpected design. Just like the previous one, the fabric appears to be satin, giving the dress a smooth and shiny feeling.
It is well crafted and sits properly on the model’s body, signifying beauty, strength and class. The pink colour paired with the bold design brings out a lovely contrast of softness to the overall look.

The top part of the dress is where the game completely changes. The neck is cut out with a black layer, giving it a unique diamond feature. It gives the illusion of depth and adds an interesting, simple design.

The collar is well pointed and sharp, giving the outfit a more professional touch, while the bow on the shoulders keeps it playful and youthful. These features balance every effect together and show the designer’s creativity by not being afraid to mix things up.
Looking at the sleeves, they are long and straight, with white cuffs that finish with a big ribbon. These cuffs stand against the pink colour fabric and bring in a soft and romantic feeling. But they also add drama, especially when the arms move.

The bow cuffs look good, but one will ask if they are truly practical, because in a real-world setting, the wearer may want to use their hands a lot. A small or neater finish on the cuffs could help keep the fuss less.
The skirt is asymmetrically cut, short on one side and long on the other. This sharp effect on the designs brings movement to the piece, making it bold and modern. The shorter side gave room for the model’s legs to show off, while the longer side brings balance and elegance.

Now, looking at how it fits the model, it’s a clean and sharp fit. The shoulders sit perfectly, the waist is shaped just right, and the lower part flows nicely without being too stiff. The overall silhouette is well-structured but still feminine. The dress doesn’t just wear the model, the model wears the dress. It flatters her body without trying too hard. The length of the short side is daring, but not over the top.
That said, there are a few things that need to be taken into consideration.

First, the fabric might wrinkle easily because of its soft nature. However, a thicker Satin or a mixed one with better hold might help keep it sharper and comfortable for every fashion. In addition, an inner layer at the chest might be too hard for some people. Some people might prefer a softer one, like a blush tone, to keep it simple.

This dress is clearly a strong piece in the collection, and it captures modern African fashion with its mix of sharp lines, soft touches, and bold choices.

This design certainly has a place in the fashion market, especially for women who are younger and love pieces that carry meaning.
With just a few touches, this dress could easily move from wardrobe to runway.

The third and final dress from the Chrispe 2023 collection is bright and full of personality.
Unlike the previous two dresses, this dress features a light gold or mustard yellow fabric. The material catches the eye as it comes with structure.
At first glance is the colour which lights the room with its warm nature. The colourful buttons, which are red, green and blue, pop boldly on the skirt. They are fun and unexpectedly add a cheerful twist to the dress, rather than making it basic or look too simple.
The cropped cut paired with the flared skirt below draws attention to the flared skirt below. The skirt is simply cut, and it falls just above the knees, creating a youthful and clean silhouette. Mixing the two pieces creates a set that’s comfortable and easy to wear.
One of the most striking elements of this design is the use of different colours buttons on the skirt and jacket. They both bring life to the look and make the entire outfit look fresh and creative. It gives a playful look, almost like a childhood memory brought back fashionably.
A simple accessory with a dark colour would help elevate the beauty of the model. However, without that, it is still a masterpiece.
Some areas need little or much adjustment to make it better. First, there is the cropped jacket that’s stylish, but might not fit all kinds of bodies. For women who prefer more coverage, a longer version of the same jacket could fit in better, because the shape may also feel stiff on some wearers.
A softer cut with gentle darts or a cinched waist option could give more shape. Still, the design is creative and carries a joyful spirit. It’s simple yet playful, clean but not boring.
Chrispe clearly understands how to bring colours together and fashion in a single outfit. This outfit stands out in the collection for its colour and light-hearted energy.
The dress is fun, bright and reminds us that fashion doesn’t have to be loud, but to make a statement.
Conclusively, the Chrispe’s 2023 collection comes with a clear and confident statement in today’s world of fashion. With its thoughtful blend of structure, tradition, and bold design choices, the brand continues to push the boundaries of African fashion while celebrating self-expression and individuality. Each piece reflects creativity and intention, showing that fashion can be both beautiful and meaningful.
