Folklore: House of Debby’s Culture-Inspired Collection

“Folklore” is the latest collection from House of Debby, a fashion brand led by illustrator and designer Deborah Adeola.

As an extension of her previous work, this collection features tiered and high-low skirts crafted from vibrant batik fabric, showcasing a blend of technical skill and cultural homage.

This collection demonstrates Adeola’s mastery in design and layering. The two-tier skirts exemplify her vision of lightness and depth, achieving a balance between movement and structure.

The addition of tulle hems softens the look, contrasting beautifully with the bold batik fabric.

However, a fuller application of tulle could have added an extra dimension, enhancing the layered effect. The high-low skirts stand out as well, designed to accentuate fluidity and evoke a sense of artistic movement.

Adeola’s attention to detail is evident in her hand-stitching and seam finishes. While the waistbands align well, minor inconsistencies create occasional pulling effects, potentially limiting ease of movement.

The tulle-hemmed skirts could benefit from wider seam allowances for added comfort and stability, and incorporating bound seams on high-low skirts would improve durability, particularly for those sensitive to interior garment quality. Additionally, subtle tucks at the waistband could refine the fit, making each piece feel more tailored.

The side zippers are a practical choice, preserving a sleek silhouette while ensuring ease of wear. An upgrade to invisible zippers could add polish to the design. The batik fabric’s rich pattern and weight provide structure, especially in the high-low skirts, although this somewhat limits their flow. The fabric works well with the two-tier skirts, aligning with the collection’s intent to merge culture with contemporary style.

“Folklore” is likely to resonate with women who appreciate fashion with cultural nuances, catering to young professionals and fashion-forward individuals alike. Each piece is versatile, suitable for various occasions. For those with a preference for sophisticated style, the two-tier skirt with its tulle accent will undoubtedly appeal.

This collection’s strength lies in Adeola’s illustrative expertise and garment construction skills, which have translated seamlessly into these expressive, finished garments.
