Actress Iyabo Ojo calls out Sanwo Olu over outrageous tax bill

June 6,2023

Actress and businesswoman, Iyabo Ojo has called out Governor Sanwo Olu and the entire Lagos state government over an exorbitant tax bill she received.

Expressing her frustration, she took to her Instagram page to share photos of the bill and voice her concerns.

In her Instagram post, Iyabo Ojo directly addressed the governor and the state government, questioning the rationale behind such outrageous personal income taxes.

She highlighted the numerous taxes she already pays for her businesses and properties, only to be faced with an additional substantial amount within a tight deadline.

She expressed her disappointment that despite her compliance and efforts to engage with the government, her concerns have been met with silence.

Iyabo Ojo emphasized that she does not possess the funds to meet these exorbitant demands and raised the question of how the government arrives at such figures.

The actress went on to reflect on the lack of support she has received from the government throughout her career, despite single-handedly raising her children and contributing to society.

She criticized the government for expecting so much from individuals while providing little in return.

Iyabo Ojo’s emotional plea highlighted the struggles entrepreneurs face in running her business and surviving in the country without government assistance.

She expressed her defiance, stating that she is not afraid of any consequences the government may impose, as everyone will ultimately face their fate.

In her words; “@jidesanwoolu @lagosstategovt, please, how do you people come up with these outrageous personal income taxes you send on a daily basis?

“After paying for different types of taxes for one’s businesses, house & all, you still come up with all this huge amount and give me 7 days to pay up, lol… Last time, you people asked me to come to your office, I came, you asked me to explain & declare what I earn, which I did, but noooooooooooooo you did not respond to my letter, bcos you want me to pay you an outrageous amount that I do not have …. make I go theif ni? I ask again, “How do you people come up with such outrageous bills?”

“I don’t know how much you think I get paid. Hence, your team will come up with this conclusion. What have you people ever done for me as a government? NOTHING!!! I have single-handedly raised my kids & so many others, plus myself without a single denial from the government. Yet you feel so entitled to reaping over 100% from where you did not sow.

“I have worked, and I’m still working tirelessly to survive in this country without the support of the government, but yet you just sit in your office and come up with different outrageous bills. Nothing is working right in this country, but yet you feel the need to take from where you have not sown.

“Since you guys insist, You can gladly come n close down my business, arrest me, jail me, or kill me for all I care. We all will die one day & I will never be afraid of what will eventually be everyone’s faith… what I do not have, I can not give.”

This recent incident echoes a previous cry for help in 2019 when Iyabo Ojo contemplated early retirement due to the challenging economic climate.

The actress shared the tax papers she received on Instagram, expressing her confusion and frustration over the near-38 million naira personal income tax demanded by Lagos state.
