Critique of FitsbyDassah’s The Golden Reverie Collection

August 20,2023

By Yemisi Suleiman

The Golden Reverie by FitsbyDassah, created by the visionary Akinsola Olufunmilayo Esther, is a striking collection that embodies sophistication and power for the modern, dapper woman.

The collection showcases bold stylistic choices with a variety of designs meant to cater to different aspects of her wardrobe—from powerful business attire to elegant evening pieces. The use of luxurious fabrics and intricate tailoring signals a focus on quality, making it clear that this is a collection designed to elevate the wearer.

However, there are a few areas where the collection could have been further enhanced to achieve even greater impact and longevity:

  1. More Varied Color Palette
The golden and metallic tones are certainly captivating and work well with the collection’s theme, but some diversification in color could have added more depth and versatility. While gold is undeniably elegant, an infusion of more earthy tones, jewel hues, or vibrant pops of color might have provided options for different seasons or occasions. Some collections can benefit from creating a visual contrast between bold, statement-making pieces and quieter, more subdued looks. A mix of matte and shine could have provided more layers and visual texture, making the collection feel even more dynamic.
  2. Inclusivity in Sizing and Fit
Though the designs are impeccable, The Golden Reverie could have placed more emphasis on a wider range of body types. The dapper woman that this collection seeks to embody comes in all shapes and sizes, and ensuring that these designs work for a variety of silhouettes would not only increase accessibility but also celebrate diversity. A few strategic pieces with looser or more flexible silhouettes could allow for inclusivity while retaining the elegance of the collection’s structure.
  3. More Experimentation with Fabrics and Textures
The use of luxurious fabrics is evident, but introducing more playful combinations of textures could have added another layer of intrigue to the collection. For instance, pairing metallic finishes with soft, tactile materials like velvet or feather trims could elevate the unexpected factor of the pieces. A strategic mixture of hard and soft textures, matte and gloss, could make each piece stand out even more, offering women an option to choose how dramatic or subtle they want their ensemble to be.
  4. Innovation in Accessories
The collection’s styling could have benefited from a deeper focus on accessories, creating a more cohesive world around The Golden Reverie. Incorporating unique bags, statement jewelry, and footwear would enhance the overall presentation and offer a complete package for the dapper woman. By leaning into avant-garde accessories—such as sculptural handbags or footwear with architectural elements—FitsbyDassah could have further emphasized the theme of power and bold femininity, making each outfit feel even more elevated.
  5. Stronger Conceptual Storytelling
While the collection’s vision is clear—dapper, elegant, and powerful—the storytelling could have been slightly more explicit in its execution. While individual pieces certainly make a statement, creating a more cohesive narrative across the entire collection would have enriched the audience’s experience. For example, some thematic consistency through visual motifs, historical references, or even a backstory could deepen the emotional connection between the collection and the consumer. A stronger narrative would not only make the collection more memorable but could also resonate more profoundly with women who identify with its core ethos.
  6. Functionality with Style
Some of the designs lean heavily into aesthetics, which is undeniably impressive, but functionality should also be considered to maintain the wearer’s comfort. Subtle design adjustments, like deeper pockets or adjustable fits, would have added practicality without compromising the high-fashion edge of the pieces. A modern, dapper woman often juggles many roles, and incorporating small, thoughtful details that align with both style and function could have made these designs even more desirable in everyday life.
  7. Sustainability and Ethical Practices
As fashion continues to move toward a more sustainable future, a conscious effort to highlight eco-friendly fabrics and ethical production practices would have been a welcome addition to this collection. In an age where consumers are increasingly aware of environmental impacts, adding a layer of sustainability messaging—whether through the use of responsibly sourced materials or transparent manufacturing processes—could elevate the collection to a whole new level of relevance and appeal.

Conclusion:
The Golden Reverie is a stunning collection that brings together high-fashion tailoring and bold concepts for the contemporary woman. Its vision is clear, and the execution is admirable in many ways.

However, by introducing more color variety, inclusivity in sizing, deeper texture experimentation, strategic accessories, enhanced storytelling, a stronger functional focus, and a commitment to sustainability, FitsbyDassah could create a collection that feels even more universally appealing and future-forward. By refining these areas, the collection would have the potential to capture even more hearts and minds within the dapper women’s market, securing its place as a true game-changer in the fashion world.
