Review: Confidence Meets Couture: House of Gianna’s “Poise & Pose” Reimagines Modern Fashion
By Rita Okoye
House of Gianna’s “Poise & Pose” collection, presented at an intimate fashion event in Lagos on the 21st of December 2023, was a masterclass in bold contrasts and sleek silhouettes.

Onosetale Winifred Areghan, the creative director, delivered a collection that balanced playful energy with refined elegance, making it one of the most captivating shows of the season.
The first look that caught my attention was a striking red gown. The full-length dress, simple in its design, featured subtle gold buttons running down the sides, adding just the right amount of detail to break the monotony. The long sleeves gave the gown a classic touch, but the thigh-high slit made it contemporary and daring. The fabric moved effortlessly with the model, catching the light in just the right way as she glided down the runway. This gown was all about understated elegance, proving that less can be more.

Following that was an eye-catching mini dress in yellow and green, an unexpected but delightful pairing. The bold mix of colours gave the look an energetic vibe, and the structured bodice provided a modern twist. The green detailing on the dress played against the yellow fabric, making it stand out in a collection that emphasized bold colour combinations. The model’s confident strut complemented the playful nature of the outfit, which felt youthful yet sophisticated.
A memorable piece was a purple and orange asymmetrical dress that truly stole the spotlight. This one-shoulder design was a masterpiece of fabric manipulation. The ruffled layers cascaded down the side, creating a dramatic silhouette that swayed with each step. The combination of purple and orange shouldn’t have worked, but it did—and beautifully. The model wearing this piece was curvier, and the dress accentuated her shape in all the right ways, highlighting Winifred’s commitment to showcasing different body types. The shimmering fabric added a touch of glamour, making it one of the standout looks of the evening.
The final look of the night was another jaw-dropper: a deep blue gown adorned with intricate embroidery. The structured bodice and flowing skirt combined strength and grace in equal measure. The embroidery, though subtle, paid homage to African craftsmanship, a nod to Winifred’s cultural roots. The gown’s rich blue hue and thoughtful construction brought the entire collection to a powerful close, leaving a lasting impression on the audience.

“Poise & Pose” was a true reflection of Onosetale Winifred Areghan’s ability to merge boldness with grace. The collection played with contrasts—whether through colour, texture, or silhouette—and delivered a dynamic range of looks that felt fresh yet timeless. It was a celebration of confidence and self-expression, and every piece on the runway reinforced Winifred’s place as a designer who continues to redefine modern fashion.
