By Rita Okoye

As the New Year unfolds, the fashion world is teeming with excitement, poised to witness the ascendance of the next generation of style mavens.

These five independent fashion designers have set themselves apart, showcasing their creativity, innovation, and exquisite designs at some of the biggest fashion events. Their ability to make significant waves in the industry on their own merits marks them as brands to watch in 2024.

Nyosi

Vanessa Ilo’s Nigerian womenswear brand, Nyosi, presents a wide array of styles. From sheer blouses to vibrant utility sets, maxi sets, batik prints, shorts, button-down blouses, and lounge dresses, Nyosi caters to various occasions. Whether you’re off to brunch or a casual hangout with friends, Nyosi offers the perfect dress, t-shirt, or printed scarf to complement your mood and style, effortlessly blending comfort with chic, trendy designs.

Desiree Iyama

Desiree Iyama has made a significant impact at the Lagos Fashion Week and the GTB Fashion Weekend, captivating audiences with her womenswear brand. With a background steeped in a lineage of successful fashion designers, Desiree Iyama approaches design with a focus on clean lines, luxurious textures, and a commitment to slow fashion. This philosophy has led to the creation of a highly acclaimed, best-selling fashion brand that views fashion as a powerful expression of everyday life.

Stylish Melora

Stylish Melora, the esteemed fashion designer, has once again captivated the fashion world with the unveiling of her 2024 collection, ‘Unscathed.’ This collection represents a pinnacle of creativity and craftsmanship, showcasing a stunning fusion of Ankara fabrics with other luxurious materials.
One of the standout features of the ‘Unscathed’ collection is Melora’s thoughtful inclusion of matching outfits for mothers and daughters. This innovative approach not only strengthens family bonds but also creates lasting memories.
Uju Monalisa Oseboh, the creative director behind the brand, draws inspiration from her roots, infusing her designs with the vibrant colors, intricate patterns, and rich textures that define Nigerian culture.

Abigail Ajobi

A British-Nigerian designer based in London, has brought a unique touch to her fashion label, thanks to her education at the London College of Fashion. If you happen to encounter one of her convertible fashion pieces at Selfridges, you’ll notice subtle nods to Yoruba heritage, with handwritten prints that add a personal touch.

Pettre Taylor

Pettre Taylor’s expertise lies in crafting artisanal pieces with intricate hand embroidery. In 2023, they launched their Trans-seasonal collection for AW23/SS24, titled “Let Our Difference Bloom.” This collection highlights the significance of distinct pieces that exhibit and honor each person’s unique personality and true essence, enabling them to dress in a manner that mirrors their individual identity..
