COUPLES’ WELL-BEING AND SELF CARE @ RAMANDAN

March 28,2024

Our physical health is closely linked to our well-being and mental health. The reason it’s very vital to maintain a healthy lifestyle during Ramadan as it helps to lower your stress levels and boost your mood.

Muslim couples are expected to go without food and drink (not even water), smoking, sexual relations etc from dawn to nightfall.

Muslims usually have two meals during the night; one, when the fast is broken after sunset, while the second one is before sunrise.
This change in pattern of eating can affect other activities of your daily lives.
The Ramadan fast is a type of intermittent fasting which can be more challenging than other kinds of intermittent fasting.
The effects of the Ramadan on well-being and self-care cannot be overemphasised especially as spouses struggle with trying to manage their domestic responsibilities, sexual lives coupled with their spirituality during Ramadan.
Here are some couples’ health benefiting tips to enhance well-being and self-care throughout Ramadan.

Make mental health a priority: Reflect on what you hope to achieve mentally and emotionally as fasting at this period can be quite challenging and incredibly rewarding too. It helps you get used to early morning routines as you get on with the fast.
Prioritize your wellbeing by concentrating on self care activities that works best for you and your soulmate.

*Pay attention to your body: An altered energy can impact fasting and for some partners, this may mean taking more naps while others may want to go out even for some fresh air.

*Get to spend a short time during the day with your immediate family, to assess your needs which can be a great self-care tip.

*Practice hydration in non-fasting hours: Dehydration can impact mood and cognitive function.
Ensure adequate intake of water to sustain your energy levels.

*Eat well nourishing, balanced diet

During evening meal known as iftar, eat natural foods; this is just as important for replenishing nutrients and energy. Remember to break your fast with fruits like dates, plus a nutrient-rich, hydrating soup or broth to restore your electrolyte and water balance.
Be sure to eat a balanced diet of whole grains, vegetables, lean proteins and healthy fats in moderate portions.

  • Indulge in practices that help calm the mind and center your thoughts; be it deep breathing exercises, guided meditation, or mindfulness techniques-all of which enhances inner peace and emotional resilience.

*Exercise: maintaining physical activity throughout this period is very essential for you and your significant other’s overall health and vitality. Incorporate light/moderate exercises such as yoga, stretching or walking, to improve your flexibility, circulation and mental clarity during the times you’re not fasting, in order to avoid fatigue and dehydration.

*Limit external stmuli: Create moments of stillness and solitude, by disconnecting from digital devices, social media, reducing exposure to other stuff that may overwhelm your senses or disrupt your inner peace.
You and your spouse should prioritize activities that promote relaxation and mental clarity.

*Listen to your body: Pay attention to your body’s signal and honour its needs during fasting; like feeling fatigued/sick, prioritize rest and self-care. Respect your body’s limitations and adjust your fasting routine accordingly for overall well-being and maintenance.

*Quality sleep: Follow a consistent sleep pattern to support cognitive function and emotional resilience to avoid altering your resting schedules.

Finally, let Ramadan fasting be a springboard for making good, healthy choices, since they become habits that you can indulge in for the rest of your life.
