“Dazzle Africa” Collection by Billions: An Integration of African Fashion and Art at AFAA Nairobi 2024

I had the incredible opportunity to witness the “Dazzle Africa” collection, designed by the creative director and fashion designer behind the brand Billions, Rhema Okonoboh, showcased at the African Fashion and Arts Awards (AFAA) in Nairobi, Kenya, on May 11th, 2024.

This collection epitomized sophistication and cultural richness, leaving a lasting impression on the audience.

From the moment the first model stepped onto the runway, it was evident that “Dazzle Africa” was something special. Rhema Okonoboh brilliantly blended modern aesthetics with traditional African elements, creating a unique narrative that captivated everyone in attendance.

The bold colors, intricate patterns, and innovative silhouettes were a feast for the eyes, reflecting a deep understanding of current fashion trends while honoring our rich cultural heritage.

What stood out most was Rhema’s ability to seamlessly weave African cultural motifs into modern designs. The collection featured traditional prints and embellishments that celebrated our heritage while appealing to contemporary tastes.

It was inspiring to see how this cultural representation promoted African fashion on a global scale, instilling a sense of pride and identity among attendees.

The collection featured a stunning array of jackets, which were the most eye-catching pieces of the outfits. The vivid green color with a bold black leopard print pattern evoked a sense of wilderness and strength, symbolizing power and independence.

The material appeared to be lightweight, giving it a slightly casual feel, while the print added sophistication and fierceness. Paired with a skirt made from sleek, satin-like fabric, the outfit provided a smooth texture that contrasted beautifully with the jacket’s bold print.

The material likely reflected light, adding a slight sheen to the overall look.
A further more outstanding moment occurred when a female model walked the runway wearing a white top underneath a brown, cropped jacket.

The jacket added a layer of contrast and a modern edge to the ensemble. She wore a high-waisted beige skirt that fit snugly around her waist, featuring a prominent thigh-high slit on the left side.

The slit added a bold, stylish element to the otherwise neutral-toned skirt. She completed the outfit with black ankle boots, which lent a strong, grounded look to the overall appearance.

Another jacket featured a vibrant red background adorned with large, abstract black and white patterns. The print seemed inspired by traditional African motifs, possibly evoking a sense of cultural identity and heritage. The fabric looked sturdy, possibly cotton or a cotton blend, giving the jacket structure and allowing the bold print to stand out. The jacket was designed like a zip-up jacket with a slightly loose fit. It had long sleeves and was cinched at the wrists with black cuffs, giving it a polished look.

The black collar contrasted nicely with the bright print, adding a touch of sophistication. The zipper detail down the center allowed for versatility in styling, making the top suitable for both casual and semi-formal occasions.
Each outfit served as a striking example of how color could be used to evoke cultural heritage while making a powerful visual statement.

A female model wore a jacket adorned with a dynamic pattern in vibrant shades of orange, yellow, teal, and white against a black background. These colors were reminiscent of traditional African textiles.

The skirt was a sleek black, providing a solid counterpoint to the colorful top. This choice of color for the skirt ensured that the focus remained on the intricate patterns above while also adding a sense of elegance and formality to the overall look.

The black skirt also tied in with the black accents in the top, creating a cohesive, well-balanced outfit.
Another look had the deep purple of the skirt and jacket as the dominant color, exuding a sense of luxury, mystery, and sophistication. Purple is traditionally associated with royalty and nobility, and in this outfit, it added a sense of refinement. The richness of the purple fabric was visually appealing, especially in contrast to the other elements of the ensemble.

One model added a touch of modern flair with a bandana and a vivid, multicolored floral print jacket. The flowers were depicted in various bright colors—reds, yellows, greens, purples, and blues—set against a deep red background. Each flower was distinct, with detailed petal and center designs, contributing to a lively and dynamic appearance.

In conclusion, the “Dazzle Africa” collection by Billions, under the creative direction of Rhema Okonoboh, was a remarkable showcase of originality, craftsmanship, and cultural representation. With its sophisticated designs and strong cultural narrative, “Dazzle Africa” is poised to make a significant impact on the global fashion industry.
