Princess Kelechi Oghene: Inspiring Innovative growth

By Yemisi Suleiman

Dr. Princess Kelechi Oghene is the Group Managing Director of GMYT Group Ltd., a leading fashion institute based in Lagos. She is a vibrant and resilient female leader who embodies the perfect blend of entrepreneurship, compassion, and style. Over the years, she has demonstrated exceptional vision and leadership, fostering a culture of innovation, creativity, and inclusivity.

Her institution provides a platform for young talents through top-tier fashion education, practical experience, and a supportive network that propels them to achieve their dreams.

Beyond her impressive professional achievements, Princess Oghene has also made a significant impact in the humanitarian sphere.

She is the driving force behind the prestigious GAHAWARDS, a platform that recognises and celebrates outstanding humanitarians for their selfless contributions to society. Now in its 12th year, the project has empowered countless individuals, particularly women and youth, providing them with access to education, skills development, and economic opportunities.

With an academic foundation from prestigious institutions like Lagos Business School, London College of Fashion, Harvard Business School, and an Executive MBA from Business School Netherlands, BSN, Dr. Oghene was recently awarded a certification in Global Business Strategy from the prestigious China Europe International Business School. This milestone is a reflection of her unwavering commitment to excellence.

In this interview, she shares insights from the world’s largest economic hub, her inspirational journey and more.

Recently, you were awarded a certification in Global Business Strategy from the prestigious China Europe International Business School, CEIB; what is this certification all about in relation to your career?

Obtaining the certification in Global Business Strategy from the China Europe International Business School has been a transformative experience. This certification has deepened my understanding of global market dynamics, strategic business planning, and cross-cultural leadership. It enables me to integrate advanced strategic insights into my business operations, fostering growth and innovation. It also equips me to mentor and inspire others with cutting-edge knowledge and practices, amplifying my impact on aspiring entrepreneurs and the broader community. More importantly, the program, championed by the LBS (Lagos Business School), has significantly influenced my approach to global business strategy. This experience has equipped me with advanced insights and tools to navigate international markets, enhance strategic decisions, and mentor young entrepreneurs effectively.

From the experience gathered, how would you compare Nigeria and China in terms of business and what are your takeaways?

The Chinese approach to business and culture is quite impressive. They prioritise, structure, discipline and community, which enables them to thrive in the face of challenges. It’s surprising that companies still invest in China despite knowing that the government may eventually force them out. However, this approach allows Chinese companies to learn from their competitors and eventually surpass them. This strategy has enabled China to become a global leader in various industries.
In Nigeria, we can learn from China’s approach by prioritising structure, discipline, and community. This includes promoting our own culture and language and adopting a long-term perspective. By doing so, we can create sustainable businesses and legacy.
Moreover, embracing excellence and exceptionalism in all aspects of life is crucial. This involves being disciplined, communicating effectively, and striving for excellence in everything we do.
Finally, aligning with the government and adopting a long-term perspective is essential for success. By doing so, we can create a sustainable legacy that benefits future generations.

What inspired you to establish a fashion school, and how did it lead to the creation of the GMYT Humanitarian Awards?

After spending many years in various facets of the fashion world, I gathered a wealth of knowledge and insight. I was determined to do things differently because the fashion industry still lacks a structured approach and adherence to standard operating procedures.
This vision of innovation and excellence in an industry that desperately needs it led to the birth of the GMYT Humanitarian Award. The award aims to honour and celebrate individuals in various sectors and industries around the world, who are breaking boundaries and driving progress.

You have been championing the GAHAWARDS for 11 years now and this year is the 12th, what impact has it made over the years?

The GAHAWARDS has made a significant impact since its inception in 2012, including recognising and encouraging humanitarians in both non-governmental organizations and for-profit corporations.
Through GAHAWARDS, we have trained 1,000 women and youth with N56 million worth of skill acquisition, empowerment sewing machines, hostel accommodation, and grants. We have also empowered 100 women and youths who are emerging designers and are passionate about becoming fashion entrepreneurs. So, we have done a lot, achieving nine out of the seventeen Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These are just a few mentioned here.

Can you share some of the most fulfilling moments?

One of the most fulfilling moments for me is celebrating and acknowledging individuals who have made significant contributions and broken boundaries with dedication and passion, without seeking recognition or praise. Seeing these individuals celebrated for their efforts inspires more hard work and determination, and this is a gift. It allows recipients to go home with the reminder that they are seen and that their work and effort matter.

And challenges you’ve faced along the way?

As for challenges, one significant hurdle has been maintaining the high standards and integrity of the awards. Ensuring that the right individuals are recognised and celebrated while overcoming logistical and organisational challenges has been demanding. Additionally, securing sponsorships and funding to sustain and expand the awards each year has been a continuous challenge. However, the impact and positive feedback we receive from the awardees and the community make all the challenges worthwhile.

What are you doing differently this year at the GAHAWARDS?

At this year’s edition, we will be expanding our reach and recognising individuals from a wider array of sectors; people who have made significant contributions to their fields. The 12th edition, happening this December, will feature movers and shakers from various industries around the world, showcasing outstanding achievements and innovations.

You have built a business empire that has continued to evolve; how were you able to gather the right talents to sustain your vision and values?

Frankly, I can say that beyond recruiting the right talents, it’s crucial to build a firm structure. Businesses thrive on systems, not just individuals. This is a core lesson I teach and instil in my team. Additionally, I have a knack for spotting raw talent and refining it into excellence, thanks to the strong structures we have in place. Discipline and focus are key attributes I encourage in young talents.

Do you set trends in the fashion industry with activities in your academy?

Setting trends is not just an activity; it is our responsibility and our mission. As an action-learning fashion education institute, we take this role very seriously. We continuously research to stay ahead of current trends and innovate to set new ones. Our curriculum is designed to blend creative design with business acumen, ensuring our students are prepared to lead and innovate. Through lookbook presentations, cutting-edge courses, and collaborations with industry professionals, we empower our students to be trendsetters. We carry this responsibility with pride, constantly pushing the boundaries of the fashion industry, and setting the pace for others to follow.

What’s the most challenging moment since your debut in your industry?
Maintaining accountability and standard practices is a significant challenge in our industry. It’s difficult to find professionals who uphold high standards of professionalism and adhere to strict operating systems. This challenge is crucial because you can’t build a successful business without structure and discipline.

Looking back, what would you say were the key factors that contributed to your entrepreneurial success?
Discipline and structure have been fundamental to my success. Having a solid, well-defined system for how things are done and maintaining high standards is crucial. If you don’t know who you are, others will define you. I have always been clear about my values and the standards I uphold. This clarity has been one of the key factors that got me through various challenges and helped me stand out in the industry.

How do you stay current with the latest fashion trends and technologies?
Research is one of the key ways I stay current with the latest trends and technologies in the fashion industry. I am a firm believer in continuous learning, and I dedicate time to studying industry reports, attending fashion shows, and participating in webinars. We integrate the latest trends and technologies into our curriculum, ensuring our students are always ahead of the curve.

How has the academy thrived amidst economic challenges?
Our resilience is due to adaptive business strategies, including diversification, continuous upskilling, and technological advancement, enabling us to navigate economic fluctuations successfully.

What is your favourite way to relax and unwind after a long day?
My favourite way to relax is by learning and studying. I genuinely love to read and register for courses at business schools to enhance my knowledge. Additionally, I enjoy playing golf; I’m a good golfer, and it’s a great way to unwind.

What’s your go-to fashion piece or accessory that makes you feel confident and empowered?
Sunglasses, car keys, handbags, and perfumes are my go-to accessories. These items not only enhance my style but also boost my confidence, allowing me to feel empowered in any setting.

How do you prioritise self-care and wellness in your busy schedule?

Self-care and wellness are major priorities for me. I achieve this by working with SMART Goals, which help me maintain a work-life balance. I believe in planning my time efficiently and breaking tasks or goals into achievable and realistic steps. This approach allows me to prioritise my well-being without compromising on my professional responsibilities.

What advice would you give to young women aspiring to leadership roles in the fashion industry?
You are, and will always be enough. Believe in yourself and your vision. Be willing to push boundaries, invest completely in yourself, and stick to your goals.

What’s your favourite travel destination for inspiration and relaxation?
Dubai is my favourite travel destination. It’s a hub of inspiration and relaxation, offering a perfect blend of luxury, culture, and innovative fashion trends and forward ideas.

How do you celebrate your accomplishments and milestones as a CEO?
I celebrate my accomplishments and milestones by giving back to the community; a very good example is GAHAWARDS–a gathering of elite individuals who have made significant contributions to society, celebrating and highlighting achievements. That is how I celebrate, and I will be celebrating at this year’s 12th edition, this December.
