Vacation by Train: What to know before your first trip

Taking vacations by train is beginning to emerge as one of the most popular ways to experience any destination.

The attractions are, of course, bounteous: your vacation gets off to a magical and immediate start that you can’t get by air or road, you get to experience the beauty of the surroundings along the way uninterrupted, and you will be healing the earth through a far more sustainable travel option as trains produce up to 75 percent less carbon emissions than by car or plane. Here’s what to know before planning your first train vacation.

Arrive early
For a smooth trip, arrive at the station at least 30 minutes before your train departs, so you have time to locate your platform and ready the bags you want to have checked. Once at the station, you can review your route as knowing your route is extremely important. Also check the length of time between connecting trains.

Do not feel confined
It’s important to know this so you do not restrict yourself unnecessarily. The main difference between a train and air travel is that you’re free to move around; get up, walk around, get something to eat or drink or even bring yours.
Avoid over-packing
Trains may not have the same tight space restrictions as planes but that still doesn’t mean you can over-pack. Each train is different, and some have limited space for luggage, so, avoid packing any non-essential items, so that you are well able to handle your own luggage on and off the train.

Note that etiquette differs
Depending on where you’re going, etiquette may be different based on culture. For instance, in some European countries, passengers do not usually talk over the phone while on board. Don’t be shocked to also find a dog, cat or even a bird while on board because people love traveling with their pets.
