Africa Fashion Week London Honours Black Excellence at US Embassy in London

Africa Fashion Week London (AFWL) kicks off this year’s event with an African Fashion Showcase at the US Embassy in London, marking Black History Month with a distinguished celebration.

Queen Ronke Ademiluyi Ogunwusi speaking at the US Embassy in London

Showcasing African design talent at this renowned location is both a privilege and an honour for us, says Queen Ronke Ademiluyi Ogunwusi, Founder of Africa Fashion Week London.

Queen Ronke Ademiluyi Ogunwusi, a British citizen, African Queen, and passionate sustainable fashion advocate, at the event, showcased some of the incredible designers set to feature at this year’s AFWL.

While delivering her speech, Queen Ronke extended her heartfelt gratitude to Rodney Ford, Head of Public Affairs, for graciously opening the doors of the esteemed embassy to the team. She praised his commitment to fostering cultural exchange between the United States and the United Kingdom as truly commendable. “As we reflect on the remarkable contributions of Black individuals throughout history, we also celebrate the vibrant tapestry of creativity and innovation flourishing today.” she says.

Queen Ronke noted that Africa Fashion Week London is not just a platform for showcasing the beauty and richness of African fashion, but it is also a celebration of the connection between Africa and the global community, particularly in the UK and US.

She recognised Mary Martin London, a member of the AFWL Team and an outstanding fashion designer who was recently honoured in Atlanta, Georgia, with a day named after her. This recognition, Queen Ronke says testifies to the profound impact individuals can have through their work. “It’s clear that the USA and UK can build bridges through diplomacy and fashion.”
Queen Ronke expressed deep appreciation to Blacks in Diplomacy for their instrumental support.

Highlight of the visit was welcoming Rebecca Lewis, on board Africa Fashion Week London as an Ambassador for AFWL. While commending Rebecca’s passion and vision for creating magic, Queen Ronke said the team is thrilled to have her on board. Queen Ogunwusi also extended special thanks to the entire AFWL team for their continued support.

In her conclusion, Queen Ronke emphasized the importance of recognizing that Black history is an ongoing journey, encompassing resilience, creativity, and collaboration, and not merely a month-long celebration. She implored that we collectively honour our past, celebrate the present, and inspire a future where our cultural heritage is respected and valued beyond borders.

2024 edition of Africa Fashion Week London is scheduled to take place from October 11 to 12 at the Kensington and Chelsea Conference center in London. This event will feature over 30 vendors who will showcase their products that represent African heritage to a global audience.
