Review: Chromia Couture by NN Collective – Bold, Vibrant, and Unforgettable

Cape Town was alive with creativity and energy on November 7th, 2024, as the AFAA Runway Showcase lit up the city. Among the standout moments of the night was NN Collective’s Chromia Couture, a collection that captured attention with its fearless embrace of colour, texture, and cultural storytelling.

Designed by Nnanna Shedrack Nweke, the creative director and fashion designer behind NN Collective, the collection was a masterful blend of boldness and sophistication.
Inspired by the Greek word “chroma,” meaning colour, Chromia Couture brought its theme to life through a series of vibrant and innovative looks.

Each outfit told a story, merging traditional African aesthetics with contemporary fashion in a way that felt both meaningful and refreshingly modern.

The show opened with a burst of vibrancy—a pair of green-and-white tie-dye overalls adorned with bold abstract patterns. Paired with a simple white T-shirt, the look exuded effortless cool. The model’s thick braids, styled into a dramatic ponytail over one shoulder, added an extra layer of flair, while minimalist earrings and black ankle boots grounded the ensemble with a touch of edge.

Elegance followed with the second look: a sleek, sleeveless red dress that fell just above the knees. Draped over it was a long burgundy coat, its bold white leaf patterns creating a stunning contrast. The rich texture of the coat paired beautifully with the simplicity of the dress, while the model’s neat high bun and subtle accessories added polish. Black platform heels completed the outfit, allowing the coat to shine as the focal point.

The third look brought a dynamic multi-coloured two-piece set to the runway. The long-sleeved jacket and flowing trousers featured a striking leaf pattern in shades of gold, orange, red, green, and blue, set against a bold black background. Tan accents on the collar and cuffs added a touch of refinement, while white side stripes on the trousers enhanced the ensemble’s modern edge. This look struck the perfect balance between vibrant energy and tailored sophistication.
One of the most talked-about outfits was a reimagined tracksuit that felt fresh and modern. A vivid blue jacket, covered in abstract patterns, was paired with loose-fitting pants accented by white side stripes. The black leather collar and cuffs of the jacket provided a sharp contrast, elevating the look from sporty to chic. This ensemble blended style and comfort effortlessly, showcasing Nnanna’s talent for pushing boundaries while maintaining wearability.

The final look closed the collection on a reflective note. A simple white T-shirt was paired with loose, floor-length pants in varying shades of brown, decorated with bold abstract patterns. The same fabric was used for the T-shirt’s sleeves, tying the look together with subtle cohesion. It was a quieter moment in the show but just as impactful, emphasizing NN Collective’s ability to find beauty in simplicity and detail.

Chromia Couture wasn’t just a showcase of fashion—it was a celebration of colour, culture, and craftsmanship. Nnanna Shedrack Nweke’s vision as both creative director and fashion designer shone through in every piece, from the thoughtful tailoring to the fearless use of vibrant patterns. The collection also embraced sustainability, proving that high fashion can honour the planet without compromising on style.

NN Collective has firmly established itself as a brand that isn’t afraid to take risks, blending tradition with innovation in a way that feels fresh and authentic. With Chromia Couture, Nweke delivered a collection that wasn’t just memorable—it was transformative, setting a new standard for African-inspired fashion on the global stage.
