PRATEEK SURI: TECHNOLOGY TIGER OF AFRICA

December 29,2024
Share:

By Jemi Ekunkunbor

Prateek Suri, the dynamic CEO of Maser Group and MDR Investment, is a man of vision, innovation, and refined passions. Known for revolutionising Africa’s consumer electronics landscape, Suri is also a devoted equestrian enthusiast who finds solace and inspiration among horses.

Born in New Delhi, India, Suri’s interest in business was kindled while working in the family business after school hours.
He holds a Bachelor of Engineering (BE) from the Birla Institute of Technology and Science and has also been honoured with Honorary Doctorate in Dubai for International Business.
The visionary entrepreneur in this interview, speaks about his journey into smart TV production, and his deep-seated admiration and passion for horses for their elegance and strength.

You got into entrepreneurship quite early; what was it like working and understuding your father?
I consider my father my first mentor. Working with him was like a masterclass in perseverance, discipline, and the value of calculated risk. He was a stickler for detail, and his ability to turn challenges into opportunities inspired me to dream big. I didn’t just learn the mechanics of business from him; I absorbed the mindset of a visionary leader. Those early lessons are the foundation of who I am today.

In your days of small beginning as an entrepreneur, what kind of business did you get involved in?
I started small but with big ambitions. My early ventures revolved around consumer electronics, where I saw an untapped potential in delivering quality at affordable prices. I experimented with assembling basic tech gadgets, learning the ins and outs of supply chains, consumer behaviour, and scalability. It was humble but incredibly insightful—every step added layers to my understanding of business.

When did your breakthrough come and how did it happen?
The breakthrough came when I launched Maser Group with a vision to make high-quality TVs affordable for the African market. It wasn’t just about selling TVs; it was about solving a real problem—giving people access to modern technology without breaking the bank. By listening to what the market needed and innovating around those demands, Maser Group became a household name and, eventually, Africa’s 7th unicorn.

How challenging is it manufacturing TV considering the stiff competition that other more popular brands pose?
Manufacturing TVs is an intricate dance of innovation, cost efficiency, and market strategy. Competing with well-established global brands is daunting, but I thrive on challenges. Our edge lies in understanding local markets deeply, tailoring products to meet unique demands, and maintaining an unwavering commitment to quality and affordability. It’s a competitive field, but it keeps us sharp and always striving for better.

As an angel investor does your activities spread to Nigeria?
Absolutely. Nigeria is a land of immense potential and innovation. I’ve invested in startups that focus on technology, sustainability, and financial inclusion—areas I believe can revolutionise industries and improve lives. The talent and entrepreneurial spirit here are unmatched, and I’m always on the lookout for partnerships that align with my vision of empowering African economies.
You have your hands in many pies today, how do you joggle all that?
It’s a combination of passion, structure, and the right team. I’m deeply invested in everything I do, which makes it easier to manage multiple ventures. I prioritise effectively, delegate where necessary, and surround myself with people who share my vision and drive. Balancing it all is challenging, but when you’re doing what you love, it becomes fulfilling rather than overwhelming.

You are known to have deep interest in horses; how did this passion begin?
My love for horses traces back to my childhood. I was captivated by their beauty, strength, and grace. Growing up, I admired their majestic nature, which seemed to embody freedom and resilience—values I hold dear in both my personal and professional life. I fondly recall my visits to Mussoorie, a renowned hill station, where I first discovered my love for horse riding. Those early experiences sparked a passion that has stayed with me ever since. Before my journey to Africa, I spent years immersing myself in the world of horse racing in India, attending numerous events and deepening my appreciation for these majestic animals and the sport itself. It wasn’t until later, during my business trips across Europe and United Kingdom, that I truly immersed myself in equestrian culture.

Share with us your experience with some of the world’s finest horses; what was that experience like?

London was magical. I had the privilege of visiting some of the most prestigious equestrian stables and meeting expert trainers. It was an extraordinary experience to ride horses bred for excellence and to see the dedication behind their training. It reminded me of the importance of nurturing talent, whether it’s in horses or in business. After countless visits to stables and attending iconic horse races like Windsor and Ascot, I made the decision to invest in horses and prepare them for future racing endeavours. However, this investment goes beyond the track—it’s about ensuring they receive proper nutrition, exceptional care, and a well-maintained environment in the stables. For me, it’s not just about racing but also about nurturing these magnificent animals to their fullest potential.
This decision to invest in horses, will it be in Nigeria or in those countries you visited?
While my passion for horses has been nurtured globally, I see tremendous potential in investing in horses here in Nigeria. The country’s rich heritage and cultural ties to equestrian pursuits make it an ideal location to grow this passion into something impactful. It’s not just about racing but about building a sustainable ecosystem for equestrian sports and culture.

How does your love for horses align with your ambition?
Horses represent power, grace, and resilience, traits that deeply resonate with me. My ambition to invest in training horses and polo stems from a desire to elevate this majestic sport and contribute to its legacy. I believe in creating opportunities for others to experience the beauty of horse riding and polo. This investment isn’t just financial; it’s a personal passion project that bridges tradition with modern excellence.

Equestrian sports are often associated with exclusivity and luxury. What draws you to this world?
Equestrian sports are not just about luxury; they represent discipline, strategy, and partnership between the rider and the horse. It’s about trust and mutual respect, which resonates deeply with my leadership philosophy. Horses teach you patience and remind you that success is a blend of hard work and harmony—principles that guide me in my ventures.

Horse riding is often described as a blend of freedom and discipline, a dance with nature and spirit. What is it about horses that captivates you so deeply, and how has this passion shaped your life?
There’s an almost mystical connection I feel when I’m with horses—it’s as if time slows down, and you’re fully immersed in the moment. For me, riding is not just a hobby; it’s a journey into a world of grace, power, and trust. Horses have this incredible ability to sense your emotions, and in return, they teach you patience, empathy, and courage. My passion began during childhood, galloping through the serene hills of Mussoorie, but it has evolved into something much greater. Now, I see horses as partners, not just in sport but in life—reflecting my values of persistence and harmony. Whether training them for polo or simply watching them race, it’s a reminder of the balance between strength and elegance that inspires me in everything I do.

Beyond horse racing, meetings like the Royal Ascot is one event that unveils glamour and high fashion; do you plan to replicate such here?
The glamour and sophistication of events like the Royal Ascot are certainly inspiring. I believe Nigeria has the potential to host similar world-class events that combine the excitement of horse racing with fashion, networking, and culture. It would be an opportunity to showcase Nigerian creativity on a global stage while fostering a deeper appreciation for equestrian sports locally.

What’s your go-to look when riding?
Oh, I enjoy the classic equestrian look. A tailored jacket, crisp shirt, riding boots, and a sleek helmet are my staples. It’s not just functional but also elegant—an extension of the sophistication that horses bring to life.

Do you own horses yourself? If so, tell us about them.
Yes, I do! I own a few horses, each with its unique personality and charm. One of my favourites is a stallion named Apollo, who embodies strength and determination. I also have a mare named Bella, who is incredibly graceful yet spirited. Spending time with them is my escape from the fast-paced world of business.

How true is it that horse riding is therapeutic and how does it contribute to your success?

Horse riding is both a physical and mental exercise. It keeps me grounded and helps me find clarity in moments of stress. When I’m riding, the world fades away, and it’s just me and the horse. This balance between focus and relaxation recharges me and enhances my decision-making in business.

What’s your favourite memory involving horses?

One of my fondest memories was participating in a friendly polo match during a business retreat in London. It was exhilarating to combine my love for horses with a sport that demands strategy and agility. The camaraderie among the players and the synergy with the horses made it unforgettable.

As someone deeply invested in Africa, do you see any opportunities to connect your passion for horses with the continent?
Definitely. Africa has a rich equestrian history and untapped potential in this space. I envision creating equestrian training centers or luxury retreats that highlight African culture and hospitality. It’s a way to promote tourism, create jobs, and celebrate the continent’s natural beauty.

With your busy schedule, how do you make out time for horse riding?
Time management is key. I prioritise what matters to me, and riding is a non-negotiable part of my routine. Whether it’s an early morning ride or a weekend getaway to the stables, I ensure that I make time. It’s about quality, not quantity, and those moments with my horses rejuvenate me.

How would you encourage readers to pursue passion outside work?
I would say, never underestimate the power of a passion. It’s not just a hobby; it’s a source of inspiration and growth. Whether it’s horses, art, or any other interest, let it remind you of life’s beauty and keep you motivated. For me, horses symbolize freedom and perseverance—qualities that fuel both my personal and professional journey.

Where would your dream travel destination be?
Argentina is high on my list! The country’s deep connection with horses is fascinating—Argentinians truly have horses in their blood. Spending time at the foot of the Andes, traversing untamed wilderness, water meadows, and wide-open spaces on their hardy ponies would be a dream come true. It’s more than just travel; it’s an immersive experience of culture, nature, and my passion for equestrian life.
