In the global fashion landscape often defined by fleeting trends and mass production, few designers manage to infuse their work with cultural significance and timeless relevance.

Victoria Oluwakemi Owolabi, founder and creative director of the fashion label MOVEK Fashion, stands out as an aspiring, powerful exception, a rising designer whose every piece tells a story of identity, heritage, and heart.

Victoria’s journey into fashion was not shaped by prestigious institutions or fashion capitals, but by the quiet rhythm of home. From a young age, Victoria was immersed in handicraft and traditional sewing, skills that quickly became more than just techniques.

They became tools of self-expression, rooted in memory and meaning. What began as a childhood passion eventually transformed into a full-fledged creative mission. At the core of this mission is the spirit of her late mother, Morolake. Her strength and deep cultural pride continue to inspire Victoria’s work. Movek is named in her honor, a name that echoes legacy and love. “Movek is my mother’s name whispered into fabric, and my voice rising from it,” Victoria shares, beautifully capturing the heartbeat behind her brand.
MOVEK is more than just a fashion label. It is a bridge between tradition and modernity, a space where African heritage meets bold contemporary design. Victoria defines the brand in three powerful words: Legacy. Style. Story. Her collections embody these values, honoring the past while also boldly shaping the future. Described as Afro-elegant and culturally-rooted, MOVEK blends iconic African textiles like Ankara and Adire with sleek, wearable silhouettes for today’s style-conscious generation.
Victoria’s design language is unmistakably her own. She breathes new life into traditional fabrics, reimagining them into pieces that are both visually striking and deeply symbolic. From structured jackets to high-slit skirts and contemporary jumpsuits, her pieces make cultural motifs wearable. Her debut collection, Oriki, is a tribute to Yoruba praise poetry; each piece is named after virtues she admires in African womanhood: grace, fire, wisdom, joy. In Victoria’s hands, fashion becomes a medium for empowerment in every way.
Though self-taught, her journey reflects relentless learning and dedication. She credits much of her foundational knowledge to “Uncle Solo,” a mentor who passed down timeless knowledge and techniques. Supplementing her hands-on experience with online resources, YouTube tutorials, and virtual masterclasses, Victoria continues to evolve her craft. Her influences, which include Lisa Folawiyo, Mowalola, and Thebe Magugu, echo her passion for unapologetically African fashion that speaks to global audiences.
Recognition has already begun to follow, with Movek being featured in Vanguard Allure, one of Nigeria’s most respected fashion publications, marking a significant milestone. Yet for Victoria, the most meaningful rewards lie not in headlines but in impact. She wants every woman to feel seen and empowered as it seems, which is what she deeply cherishes.
Like many emerging designers, Victoria faces the familiar hurdles of limited funding, brand visibility, and breaking through a competitive industry. Still, she meets these challenges with a clear, strategic approach: building a strong digital presence, creating consistently, and fostering authentic connections. Movek may be in its early chapters, but Victoria’s vision is compelling and definitely a growing one.
