Maryam Elisha crowned First Female Queen in Zuru Kebbi

Maryam Elisha, the renowned fashion entrepreneur and CEO of Rikaoto By Me has made history by becoming the first female Queen of Zuru in Kebbi State.

She was recently crowned “Sarauniyar Matan Rafin Zuru” in a grand ceremony attended by dignitaries and well-wishers.

This significant achievement adds another feather to Elisha’s cap, following her recognition as a Doctor of Philosophy in Business Administration from Prowess University in the United States earlier this year. Known for her exceptional talent in styling beauty queens, particularly Chidinma Adetshina, Elisha’s journey from beauty queen to royal queen has been nothing short of inspiring.

In a social media post, the newly crowned Queen expressed her delight and gratitude: “I am delighted to announce that our community has deemed it fit to recognize me by putting some responsibility on my shoulder and to celebrate female excellence achievement in Zuru Kebbi.” She emphasized the significance of this title, particularly in a community where such honours were traditionally bestowed upon men. “This is a big deal to me, particularly because such a title is not given to women in my area, but today my people are bending rules to accommodate and celebrate female excellence and inclusivity in community and nation-building,” she stated.

When asked about her key focus as a traditional ruler, Elisha highlighted several areas.

She said: “The focus for me now as a traditional ruler in a community includes several key responsibilities and roles aimed at ensuring the well-being and harmony of the community. Community Development Advocacies, whereby I will play a vital role in advocating for and facilitating development projects, such as education, healthcare, and infrastructure, by partnering with government agencies and organizations.

I will also serve as custodian of culture and heritage while providing leadership to the community. Another important thing I will be directly involved with is Conflict Resolution, especially among women, ensuring peaceful coexistence and upholding traditional values.  As a cultural preserving agent in the community, I will play an important role in participating in cultural festivals, ceremonies, and practices that preserve the community’s identity. I will also serve as an intermediary between our community and the government, ensuring our people’s voices are heard in policymaking and implementation.”

While the title will undoubtedly influence her public appearances, Elisha clarified that it won’t drastically alter her everyday life. “I have always been a well-dressed lady who respects my cultural ethics,” she said. “The title will further permit me to now wear royal attire, especially on public outings or traditional festivals. And since I am a fashion designer, I can be creative about it to further beautify my culture.”

Elisha’s crowning marks a significant milestone for women in Zuru Kebbi, demonstrating a growing recognition of female leadership and contribution to community development
