5-Second Healthy Habits You Can Start Today
By Yemisi Suleiman
We all want to be healthier, but in the hustle and bustle of Nigerian life, from Lagos traffic to endless to-do lists, it can feel like there’s simply no time.

However, a few seconds each day can lead to long-term benefits for your body, mind, and overall well-being. Here are simple yet powerful five-second habits you can start today for a healthy life.
1. Drink Water First Thing in the Morning
Before your morning tea, coffee, or even checking WhatsApp, start with a glass of water. Our hot weather makes hydration essential, yet many of us don’t drink nearly enough. Just one glass upon waking can kickstart your metabolism, flush out toxins, and energize your system.
2. Stand Up and Stretch
Whether you’re in the office, in traffic, or at home watching TV, sitting for too long isn’t doing your body any favours. Stand up, reach for the ceiling, and stretch it out. In just a few seconds, you’ll feel a release of tension and improve your circulation.
3. Say No to That Extra Cube of Sugar
We love our sweet tea and coffee, but too much sugar is a major health risk, especially in a country where diabetes and obesity are on the rise. Skip that extra cube. Your taste buds will adjust over time, and your body will thank you.
4. Breathe Deeply
In the middle of a hectic day, take a moment to inhale deeply, hold it, and exhale slowly. It only takes five seconds, but it’s a powerful way to reduce stress, clear your mind, and lower your blood pressure naturally.
5. Choose Fruit Over Junk
Instead of reaching for that meat pie or puff-puff, grab a banana, apple, or slice of watermelon. Fruit provides quick energy and essential nutrients without the grease and guilt.
6. Wash Your Hands—Properly
Before meals, after using the restroom, or coming home from outside, take a few seconds to wash up. Soap, water, and five seconds can protect you from a world of germs.
7. Step Into the Sunlight
Our tropical sun is a natural source of Vitamin D, something many people are unknowingly deficient in. Step outside for a few seconds daily. Morning sun is best and easiest on the skin.
8. Read the Label
Next time you buy that bottle of juice or pack of noodles, take five seconds to scan the ingredient list. You’ll be surprised how many “healthy” products are loaded with sugar, salt, or additives.
9. Put the Phone Down Before Bed
Quality sleep starts with a screen-free wind-down. Before you scroll one more time on Instagram, put the phone away. You’ll sleep better, and your mind will be more refreshed the next day.
