African Fashion is Not Just a Trend, It’s a Force — Queen Ronke Ademiluyi Ogunwusi on AFWL’s Impact

In 2010, Queen Ronke Ademiluyi Ogunwusi embarked on a transformative journey to redefine global fashion norms and highlight the richness of African creativity. This vision culminated in the establishment of Africa Fashion Week London (AFWL), a platform dedicated to showcasing the continent’s heritage, craftsmanship, and innovation. Now, as AFWL prepares for its 15th edition on August 9–10 in London, Queen Ronke reflects on the remarkable evolution of this influential movement.

Inspiration Behind AFWL

At its inception, African fashion was largely overlooked on the global stage. Recognizing the immense talent and cultural wealth across Africa, Queen Ronke created AFWL to amplify these voices, offering a space for African designers to share their stories through fashion.

Achievements Over 15 Years

What started as a passion project has blossomed into an international platform that has launched numerous careers, elevated indigenous craftsmanship, and positioned African fashion as a significant player in global discussions—not merely as a trend, but as a lasting force.

Fueling Passion

Queen Ronke’s passion is driven by the resilience of African designers, the vibrancy of the continent’s culture, and the myriad untold stories waiting to be expressed. Despite facing challenges, her mission remains steadfast: to celebrate African excellence and heritage. This anniversary marks not just a milestone, but the continuation of a legacy.

Highlights of the 15th Edition

Attendees can expect a vibrant celebration of African fashion and culture, featuring four captivating catwalk shows, the colorful Adire Festival, a focus on sustainable fashion, and immersive cultural experiences.

Significance of the Adire Festival

This year’s Adire Festival will showcase contemporary interpretations of traditional Adire fabrics, spotlighting creations from the Adire Oodua Textile Hub. It serves as a tribute to African textile heritage and a nod to artisanal roots.

Promoting Sustainable Fashion

Sustainability is a core tenet of AFWL’s mission. The platform highlights designers who prioritize eco-friendly practices, from sourcing sustainable materials to ethical production, advocating for a greener future in African fashion.

Diverse Designer and Model Line-Up

AFWL will feature over 30 fashion, beauty, and lifestyle brands of African heritage, showcasing a blend of emerging and established talent. The runway will be graced by a diverse cast of models that reflect the continent’s rich diversity.

Incorporating Traditional African Fashion

Indigenous fabrics like Adire are seamlessly integrated into contemporary design narratives, celebrating their ongoing influence on global fashion trends.

Opportunities for Emerging Designers

AFWL has long served as a launchpad for rising talent, providing a global stage for emerging designers to showcase their work, network with industry leaders, and gain visibility. It is more than just a fashion show; it is a gateway to growth and collaboration.

Global Impact of AFWL

The platform’s greatest achievement lies in empowering African creatives and fostering a global appreciation for African fashion. AFWL has played a pivotal role in positioning African designers as influential innovators on the world stage.

Future of African Fashion

Looking ahead, Queen Ronke envisions a future where African fashion is celebrated for its originality and impact. Designers are rewriting narratives and demonstrating that African creativity is not only relevant but revolutionary.

Role of Technology in the Industry

Technology, particularly AI, is reshaping the fashion landscape. From enhancing design processes to revolutionizing marketing and production, AI presents exciting opportunities. African designers are leveraging these tools to expand their global reach.

What’s Next for Africa Fashion Week London?
Queen Ronke emphasizes that AFWL is just getting started. The future promises even more innovation, collaboration, and celebration. African fashion will continue to thrive, grounded in authenticity, driven by creativity, and fueled by pride.
