Waterfalls— places where flowing stream or river water drops, cascading nearly vertically over series of steep ledges, are some of the most popular natural attractions on the planet. Nigeria, luckily, boasts of several stunning waterfalls, each with unique features and cultural significance.

Looking to explore nature’s beauty without breaking the bank on international travel expenses, consider visiting some of Nigeria’s most thrilling waterfalls— whether for that dream picnic or quiet getaway with that special someone. These waterfalls boast of incredible backdrops for those selfies and social media contents that would have your followers scrolling your timeline.

Erin Ijesha Waterfall – Osun State
This seven-tiered waterfall cascading over 20 meters, is one of Nigeria’s most famous. Nestled in lush forests near Ilesha in Osun State, it is revered as a sacred site with myths tied to Oduduwa’s descendants. Each level offers unique views, with the seventh tier, in Ekiti, considered mythical. It is characterised by clear pools for swimming, hiking trails, and vibrant greenery. Locals believe the waters have healing powers.

Farin Ruwa Waterfall – Nasarawa State

One of Africa’s tallest waterfalls at 150 meters, Farin Ruwa, which literarily means White Water, is located in Wamba area of Nassarawa State. The fall, which peaks around April and November each year, plunges from the Jos Plateau, creating a misty spectacle.

Owu Waterfall – Kwara State

West Africa’s tallest waterfall at 120 meters, Owu is a hidden gem in Owa Kajola, plunging into a cold, clear pool surrounded by dense rainforest. Its remote location adds to its mystique. Icy waters, lush vegetation, and opportunities for hiking and camping are some of the attractions that await you in this waterfall.

Agbokim Waterfall – Cross River State

Near the Cameroon border, this waterfall features seven streams converging in a tropical rainforest, creating rainbows in the mist. Its proximity to Obudu Cattle Ranch makes it a great combo trip. It boasts of crystal-clear pools where you can enjoy swimming, dense jungle, and a serene ambiance. It’s also a biodiversity hotspot with rich flora and fauna.

Gurara Waterfall – Niger State

Named after the Gurara River, this 30-meter-wide waterfall near Minna is a popular spot for its accessibility and scenic beauty. Local legends link it to two hunters, Gura and Rara. It features wide, frothy cascades, picnic areas, and a nearby cave. It’s less crowded than Erin Ijesha but equally stunning.

Matsirga Waterfalls – Kaduna State

Talk about its irresistible, shiny bubbles of water tumbling down from the hard rocks. Talk about the screeching sounds as you get closer to the fall. Located in Madakiya Town, Kaduna State, the Matsirga Waterfall is about 30 meters high and surrounded by rocks and lush vegetation. Known as the “River Wonderful” by locals, it originates from the Kagoro hills and offers a serene environment for visitors.

Kwa Waterfall – Cross River State

Located in Akamkpa, Cross River State, Kwa Waterfall is a hidden gem within the Cross River National Park. It takes 234 steps to reach the base of this beautiful waterfall. Its lush greenery and serene setting make it a perfect spot for nature lovers.

Arinta Waterfall – Ekiti State

Located in Ekiti State, Arinta Waterfall is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Nigeria. Like Erin Ijesha, it has seven layers and is located near the Ikogosi Warm Springs. The peaceful setting makes it a great spot for picnics and relaxation.
