Uncle Sam @90: What the people say
By Yemisi Suleiman
As Chaiman and Publisher of Vangaurd Newspapers Mr. Sam Amuka, fondly known as Uncle Sam, marks his 90th birthday, tributes have continued to pour in from all quarters, celebrating the iconic journalist.
From politicians and journalists to close friends and mentees, Allure engages with notable figures who share their personal insights about Uncle Sam. These heartfelt reflections, capture the essence of a man whose legacy continues to shape Nigerian journalism and touch countless lives.
Senator Ben Murray-Bruce…..”He treats like an equal”

Contrary to what many people think, Uncle Sam is a revolutionary — a pioneer. He holds strong political views, though that side of him may not always be visible. If you visit him, he’ll take a photo with you but won’t want it published. He’s very shy. Give him an award, and he might not show up, then call you afterward and jokingly threaten your life, asking why you gave it to him (laughs).
He’s a tough man, but I love him. He’s one of those rare individuals who reminds you of the father you had, or wish you had. He treats you like an equal, like a brother. He protects and cares about you. He’s a special man, and I pray he lives to be 145. Amen. (Laughs)
Ike Nwachukwu…….incredibly kind and deeply understanding

I met Uncle Sam in my late teens when I joined Daily Express as a reporter. He was a Sub-Editor then. He’s witty, knowledgeable, fearless, and always conscious of his purpose. He never lets anything or anyone deter him from what he believes in.
He’s also incredibly kind and deeply understanding of people and their views. He’s absolutely dependable. It’s no surprise that at 90, everyone is here to celebrate him. I wish him many more years of happiness, joy, and good health. He is, without doubt, an icon.
Victor Hammond…..He genuinely cares

He’s like family to me, not just to me, but to my entire household. If you know Uncle Sam, you’ll understand one thing: he is consistent. He genuinely cares for everyone around him.
Even when we don’t expect anything, almost every other week, he sends something, fruits, gifts, just to show he’s thinking of us. He sees everyone as his family and never abandons anyone. He’s a loyal, consistent friend.
I wish him a great year ahead, and a long, fulfilling life. I believe he’ll live many more years. His mother lived to 107, I didn’t even know until I read it in Vanguard. Just a few weeks before she passed, she invited me for breakfast at her apartment. She looked strong and vibrant. So yes, I pray Uncle Sam lives much longer too.
Peter Arigbe…..”People like him are rare”
He is truly special. People like him are rare. I’ve known him since 1967, when I was at university. We met at the home of a mutual friend, the late Professor Isidore Okpewho, in Ibadan, and have been friends ever since.
Uncle Sam is 11 years older than me, but we share meals and drinks together often. He is dependable, reliable, and deeply loving. My family is like his. He has actively participated in all my children’s celebrations.
If he hears something is wrong with you, he’s there before anyone else. He comes from a family of longevity, his sister died at 99 and his mother at 107, so I’m confident he has many more years ahead. I wish him continued good health and strength to enjoy old age.
Omotayo Omotosho….”He says the truth regardless..”

I’ve always known Uncle Sam as a fearless and prolific writer and publisher. He says the truth, regardless of whose ox is gored. I began my media career in 1985 during my youth service at NTA Ibadan, and I’d already heard so much about him.
Later, when I moved to Lagos and worked in public relations, I often visited Vanguard. He’d always support our events without charging us. He believed in me and liked my zeal. I’ve always seen him as a father figure, my mom is 94, and Uncle Sam is 90.
We live in the same neighbourhood in Maryland. He’s my neighbour, mentor, and father figure in journalism. As he turns 90, I pray that his body is renewed and that he lives many more vibrant years. We’re not ready to send him forth at 100!
Chief Dr. Nike Akande, CON…..He is an icon

Uncle Sam is a remarkable achiever — someone who has positively touched countless lives, including mine. When I served as Minister of Industry, he gave me full support through the media.
I’m also a proud recipient of the Vanguard Lifetime Achievement Award. He is a legend, a family man, and an icon. I congratulate him and wish him many more happy returns, with good health and continued success.
Abike Dabiri-Erewa…..He cares deeply

Uncle Sam is witty, humorous, and though he may appear reserved, he’s a tough man with a soft heart. He is grounded and genuine.
He is a man of integrity, and it’s inspiring to see him maintain that at 90. He’s kind and cares deeply about people. Though I came from broadcasting, we grew close because of the person he is. He always gave me honest guidance and advice.
He’s a role model and an inspiration. I’m glad we’re celebrating him today. Uncle Sam is truly a shining light to all of us.
Lady Maiden Ibru…..He is an easy-going man
Uncle Sam is a beloved cousin to all of us. I am Itsekiri, and my mother was also Itsekiri. He is such an easygoing man, very playful. We share a lot of jokes; in fact, there are some I can’t even tell you, naughty jokes! We wish him all the best. We love him dearly. At 90, he doesn’t look it, hardly a wrinkle on him!
