Summer: Travelling Europe during a heatwave

The dream of sipping espresso at a sidewalk cafe, strolling through one of Europe’s major capital cities, or climbing iconic citadels changes drastically when a blistering 43°C heatwave turns streets into an oven.
European summers have shifted, making extreme heat the new normal for travelers. However, this does not mean you should cancel your long-awaited trip. Instead, it requires a fundamental shift in how you navigate the continent. By adopting local survival rhythms and making deliberate, strategic adjustments, you can successfully beat the heat and experience an unforgettable European adventure.

Embrace the Split-Day Itinerary
Abandon the traditional nine-to-five sightseeing schedule entirely. Split your day into two chapters by exploring outdoor monuments at dawn before the crushing heat sets in. Retreat indoors by eleven in the morning for a museum visit or a hotel nap. Re-emerge after five in the evening to join the vibrant local evening strolls.

Seek Out Underground Sanctuaries
Look for historic attractions that naturally defy the outdoor thermometer. Descending into underground spaces offers instant relief. Because these structural spaces sit deep beneath the earth, they maintain a naturally chilled temperature year-round.

Swap the Metro for Water Transit
Subway systems in older European cities often lack climate control, turning underground platforms into sweltering saunas. Keep much cooler by utilising over-ground river and coastal transit networks instead. Opting for a public ferry or a river cruise allows you to travel between landmarks while catching a refreshing breeze.

Upgrade to a Heatwave Daypack
Standard summer packing is insufficient for modern heatwaves, so upgrade your daily gear to include high-utility survival items. Swap plastic water bottles for insulated stainless steel flasks that keep ice frozen for hours. Pack electrolyte replacement powders to prevent fatigue, and carry a UV-blocking travel umbrella for instant shade.

Pivot to High-Altitude or Coastal Destinations
Steer your route away from landlocked concrete cities if your travel itinerary is still flexible. Shifting your geography to high-altitude mountain towns guarantees crisp air and lower evening temperatures. Alternatively, staying on coastal fringes leverages constant ocean breezes and immediate access to open water.

Monitor Local Emergency Warning Apps
European nations use sophisticated digital infrastructure to track climate extremes and broadcast real-time heat risks. Download local weather and public safety apps to track colour-coded traffic light warning systems. These platforms send instant notifications about air quality, peak danger hours, and temporary monument closures.
