Outrage continues to trail the Kannywood actress banned for life over a hug

The lifetime ban placed on Kannywood actress, Rahama Sadau  by the Motion Picture Practitioner’s Association of Nigeria, based in Kano state is still generating some more outrage. There are people who felt the ban was justified and  for others;  a lifetime ban was a hefty one for such a misdemeanor.

The 22 years old actress was banned for what the head of the movie industry in Kano state, Salisu Mohammed termed  “her recent immoral appearance in a certain video song where she appeared … hugging and cuddling.”

Rahama Sadau’s ordeal started after she appeared in a music video of ClassiQ’s  a rap artiste, where she shared a fleeting hug with the singer. In the video,  Sadau wore traditional clothes, demurely selling vegetables in a local market, before ClassiQ’s teasing convinces her to join him in a walk on nearby railway tracks.

It was in this situation that love apparently blossomed, between the couple. Later seen wearing jeans and a short-sleeved T-shirt, though also a headscarf, Sadau walks hand in hand with the rapper and, very fleetingly, appears to embrace him.

“Rahama has crossed the boundary line this time around. The video is all revealing and this is not proper for a Muslim girl to go this extreme in an open video,” one fan said.

Meanwhile, there has been a series of clashes between film-makers and religious conservatives in the north of Nigeria. In August, clerics stopped a $10m plan to build a “film village” outside Kano, saying it would undermine Islamic values.

Salisu Idris, a Muslim cleric in Kano, told AFP news agency that religious leaders in the city were “happy that the film-makers have realised the truth of what we have been insisting they do: sanitise the film business, which promotes immoral values among our youth”.

He hoped the sanction on Sadau would be a “deterrent to others”.

In spite of the outrage in the North, Raham Sadau has gotten several offers of work from the Nollywood industry and even some outside of the shores of this country.
