18 Years of democracy and 4 stylish First ladies

By Sewe Ishola,
Over the past 18 years since the return to democratic rule in Nigeria, we have witnessed stylish and glamorous first ladies.

These wives of our presidents, both present and past have stamped their own footprints in the sands of the fashion-scape.

We love them and bring you some of their fashion sense from over the years. Here we go:

Stella Obasanjo

This is mama glamour herself. She literally outdid herself in the fashion stakes. Her pieces, make up and accessories were always just right and sometimes, over board.

Unfortunately, she died, in 2005 while her husband, former president, Olusegun Obasanjo was still in office. The feelers was, she had died as a result of complications from a plastic surgery gone wrong.

So, even till death, this mama was doing her best to look good.

Hajia Turai Yar Adua

She was the Strong woman of Aso Rock in her hey days. Her fashion sense is a bit understated, nonetheless, she’s got her A-game fashion wise intact.

Unfortunately, her husband’s death on May 5, 2012 cut short her stay in Aso Rock.

Patience Goodluck

Patience Goodluck aka Mama Peace. This former First Lady not only knew how to make Nigerians laugh without trying, she also had a dress sense, which often times leaves us all wondering about her background.

Mama Peace is a peacock when it comes to fashion, she likes to show off and did a very good job of it.

Aisha Buhari

This is the current woman in the spotlight but she has refused to be addressed as a First Lady, simply choosing to be known as the wife of the president.
She comes ably equipped to the fashion scene as she is an expert in cosmetology and has  even authored a book on the subject matter.

Apart from that, Hajia Aisha knows her onions where fashion is concerned; from her collection of designer watches to designer pieces that says, “Forget what my husband says, pay attention to me.”

She and her daughters have perfected the act of understated elegance, which might have been influenced by their cultural background.

Flashy or subtle, we love all our past First Ladies and current wife of the president. At least, we never fear, they will fail to come to the table, suitably draped where fashion is concerned.
