Mental Health In Marriage

April 7,2019
Share:

Supportive relationships are big turn on for good health as it can help to modify stress, by making people feel they have a back bone that they can always fall back on. Stress can heighten just about any health challenge like the brain, thyroid, immune system and obesity issues.

Most times, mental health can be difficult to understand or even measure because to a large extent, it is invisible. As a result, you have to be careful with observation. Intentional communication will help you learn, and discover all you need to know about mental health as it relates to the individuals and couples.

The link between marriage and mental health is really fascinating; especially, as there are both positive and negative impacts.

Mental health has a lot to do with self confidence and self esteem. As a person or couple, you feel good when you know you are valuable. When one is happily married, showered with love, valued and appreciated, it goes a long way in boosting his or her sense of belonging, confidence and contentment. This atmosphere creates a strong foundation to operate in a healthy way, physically, mentally and emotionally. The opposite is also true if your partner is critical and derogatory towards you. This could undermine your sense of worth, and it would be much more impossible to remain mentally stable in this kind of union.

Life is all about relationships. Once married, your partner becomes your main responsibility even though you still have other important relationships that need to be sustained like that of relatives and friends. Couples who are mentally balanced, are capable of maintaining these relationships with their significant other. But when they start having few or no good relationships besides one another, this could just be an unhealthy sign especially, if it is one of the partner that is stopping or making the other to

drift from previous close friendships. This could actually be a serious indication of emotional abuse.

A mentally upright person is that one who can make and take responsibility for his/her own decisions, be it negative or positive. A sensible person will not expect other people to take difficult decisions of life on their behalf. A normal marriage allows room for spouse to give each other space to make their own decisions without trying to influence it. At the same time, you both can discuss the options together and give support regardless of the ultimate decision that he /she will take. The role of mental health in wedlock can take a sinister turn, if one of the mates insists on making all the decisions all the time.

It is natural to express our emotions whether through crying, anger, anxiety or guilt. However, when these feelings begin to overwhelm you to the point of not being able to function normally in everyday life over a period of time, then it could be an indicator that all is not well mentally. Actually, one’s spouse should be the ideal candidate to call for the necessary professional help. This, most times can be pushed aside until it gets to a disastrous stage. As it relates to mental aliment in matrimony, mental well being is simply just as fundamental as physical well being.

Yes, it is true that genuine laughter is food for the soul, so if you and your mate laugh together regularly, that means you have a bond that needs to be nurtured and valued. The truth is, only couples who are mentally healthy, can laugh at both themselves and others. But if you happened to be one of those serious- minded people who cannot take jokes, then it might seem impossible for you to enjoy your relationship. Whereas, on the other hand, if your significant other’s jokes are mean and demeaning, and you confront him/ her about it, he or she refuses to change and blames you for being over sensitive, perhaps you should seek professional help. This is a well- known strategy for mentally unstable people, who consistently break down their partner with supposed humor. So if no one is laughing, it might actually be abuse and not humour.

The possible and clearest sign of good mental health, is one’s ability to show others respect and dignity. This is because you know your own self worth, as well as the worth of every other person irrespective of their age, beliefs, gender, nationality or status in life. More significantly is the fact that you are able to behave with understanding, despite the dissimilarities between you and others, while maintaining your boundaries of good behavior either in words or deeds. This is why wedlock is the ideal union to practice and promote this type of respect in relationships; first with your spouse, children then finally, family and friends.

A failed marriage can harm one’s mental health.

However, it shouldn’t be a reason to avoid marriage. A good martial life can improve emotional, physical and mental health. The best way out, is to avoid bad relationships rather than not indulging in it at all.
