‘4th Republic’, Movie On Nigerian Politics, To Premiere On Netflix June 13

A movie on Nigerian justice system and politics, ‘4th Republic’ is set to premiere on Netflix, an American streaming platform, on June 13.

The movie was premiered across cinemas in April 2019.

It is however, making its Netflix debut on a day after June 12 Nigeria’s democracy day one of the most significant days in the country’s post-independence political history.

The political thriller, directed by Ishaya Bako, features several movie stars including Kate Henshaw, Bimbo Manuel, Sani Mu’azu, Linda Ejiofor, Yakubu Mohammed and Enyinna Nwigwe.

It follows the story of Mabel King (Henshaw), a governorship aspirant, in the aftermath of a violent and fraudulent election that results in the death of Sikiru (Jide Attah), her campaign manager.

As the search for the killers unravel, Mabel goes on to challenge the decision that declares Idris Sani (Mu’azu), incumbent governor, as winner of the election.

Speaking on the movie’s debut on Netflix, Bako said that the project would not only provide critical reflections on the country’s politics but also entertain the people.

“4th Republic is a gripping thriller that is reflective of the Nigerian system, from our do or die politics to our ironic optimisms. It is one of the most important Nigerian films to watch,” he said.

Written by Emil Garuba and Zainab Omaki, the movie is a co-production of Griot Studios Ltd. and Amateur Heads Productions.

It was produced by Ummi A. Yakubu, Bem Pever and Kemi ‘Lala’ Akindoju.

The movie is also supported by John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation and the Open Society Initiative for West Africa (OSIWA).

In September last year, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and Enough is Enough Nigeria (EiE) partnered with producers of ‘4th Republic’ to screen the movie in communities and universities across the country.
