UNILAG shuts hostels, return to online learning following COVID-19 outbreak

The management of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) Akoka, has shut down students’ hostels and suspended physical lectures on campus indefinitely.

This move came on the heels of an emergency Senate meeting held recently to check the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic amid reports that the virus had hit the school with many of its students reportedly being confirmed positive for it.

According to a notice sent via Short Service Message (SMS) from the Office of Dean of Students’ Affairs to students on Wednesday afternoon, the UNILAG management directed all the students in the hostels to vacate the halls of residence latest by noon on Thursday, July 15, 2021.

The message shared by Nigerian Tribune read, “No access will be granted to any student afternoon on 15 July as all the hostels will be locked indefinitely and therefore advised the students to move all their belongings at once.

“So, lectures for the rest of the semester will be delivered virtually with effect from July 26, 2021.”

It would be recalled that over the weekend, the governor of Lagos, Babajide Sanwo-Olu warned residents that the third wave of the pandemic had hit the state.

While urging residents to be alert, he advised them to strictly ahead to the safety protocols.
