Caring for your Natural Short Hair

Unlike weaves and wigs, caring for your natural hair is a different ball game. Natural short hairs are not usually easy to handle, but finding the right tools and methods for caring for them, will set you on the path to embracing your true African beauty.

We have outlined seven ways to make caring for your natural short hair easy, so that you can have that healthy bounce and flaunt it proudly.

USE SMALLER AMOUNTS OF HAIR PRODUCTS

Short hairs still need leave-in hair care products such as hair cream and hair serum, but don’t forget that they will require less quantity than your previously long hair. This is because using too much product can weigh down your short hair and make it look greasy.

WASH MORE OFTEN

When you have short hair, it tends to get oilier at a quicker rate than longer hair. The oil comes from the roots, which are much closer to the ends of your hair when your strands are short. So, you have to double up your washing efforts to combat greasy strands. To get fresh tresses without losing moisture, use a shampoo and conditioner that is formulated to replenish your hair strength.

USE A DEEP CONDITIONING TREATMENT

Deep-condition your hair once a week or every two weeks, using a mineral oil-free conditioner.

Regularly deep-conditioning your hair will make for healthier, softer, and less damaged hair. This usually works better after you have used a clarifying shampoo. If you want more protein balance in your hair, you can add honey, olive oil, shea butter, or any other natural oil to your conditioner.

OIL YOUR HAIR FREQUENTLY

For oils that absorb into the hair shaft and hydrate the hair as well, you should invest in the use of coconut oil, olive oil, or avocado oil. These oils are best applied after using a leave-in conditioner and for tighter textures to add necessary moisture to your hair.

EAT HEALTHY MEALS

As nutritious meals are essential for your body, they also contribute to stronger, healthier hair. A balanced healthy meal rich in low-fat proteins, dairy products, fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, will aid your hair growth. For a healthy scalp, eat foods rich in Omega-3 fatty acids such as salmon, walnuts, and avocados.

Sleep With A Satin Scarf Or Bonnet

If you are rocking short hair, never go to bed without a satin scarf or bonnet on. It keeps your hair from tangling and breaking while you sleep. Also, invest in a smooth satin or silk pillowcase.

CONSIDER CHANGING YOUR HAIR COLOUR

There is no reason you have to stick with just one short hair look at a time. If you want a whole new look, pair your short haircut with new hair colour. If you’re wondering whether you’d look beautiful with blonde hair or red hair, now’s your chance to find out. After hitting the salon for your cut, you can update your hair hue at home with the help of an at-home hair colour kit.
