Lagos Fashion Week: The Impact of Collaborative Design Teams

November 9,2021
Share:

The recently concluded Lagos Fashion Week 2021 showed a combination of existing Nigerian brands and a growing number of emerging creative voices, reflecting the significance of collaborative design in modern fashion.

The collections shown were a representation of the layered process that influences silhouettes, movement, and cohesion in garments before they are finally showcased.

In a number of collections, collaborative design teams have sought to ensure that there is a seamless blend of structure and fluidity. The way bodices have been designed for balance, the design and construction of sleeves, and the use of layering in garments are all a representation of the complexity and sophistication that Nigerian fashion has achieved, beyond its aesthetics.

Within this framework, young and emerging designers such as Jennifer Elijah operate in a studio environment in which constructional integrity and refinement are paramount. Her contributions are geared toward proportion, layering, and fabric interaction, all of which are aimed at creating a coherent and balanced look in terms of structure and concept, much in the same way as the lead designers’ contributions.

Fashion critics and analysts have gradually recognized and emphasized the importance and significance of these collaborative platforms. The coherence and balance that have come to be seen in the collections have, in fact, been a result of problem-solving and collaboration, both from the main designers and the supporting teams.

The responses from the audience and industry demonstrate the effect of these processes. Bloggers, photographers, and social media contributors all comment on the effect of the multiple collaboration process within the studio to create garments that are not only visually interesting but grounded within proportion and functional design.

The Lagos Fashion Week 2021 event demonstrates a wider phenomenon within the Nigerian fashion industry: the role of creative contributors to the overall collection process. Designers such as Jennifer Elijah embody this new professional approach to fashion design, highlighting the role of structure, movement, and silhouette within the overall sophistication of the Nigerian fashion industry.
