7 alarming effects of skin bleaching you need to know

March 4,2023
Share:

Skin bleaching is a widespread practice in many places, and it involves using cosmetic products to lighten the skin tone.

However, this practice has been linked to various negative effects on the skin and overall health.

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued several warnings about the dangers of skin bleaching products.

Here are seven negative effects of bleaching:

Skin damage

Most skin bleaching products contain harmful chemicals such as hydroquinone and mercury, which can damage the skin. These chemicals can cause skin irritation, inflammation, and even scarring.

Skin cancer

Long-term use of skin bleaching products has been linked to an increased risk of skin cancer. Some of the chemicals in these products, such as hydroquinone, can cause skin damage, leading to skin aging and other skin problems.

Kidney damage

Mercury is a common ingredient in skin bleaching products, and it can cause serious harm to the kidneys if it is absorbed into the body.

Neurological damage

Mercury exposure can also cause damage to the nervous system, leading to neurological problems such as tremors, memory loss, and even paralysis.

Hormonal imbalance

Some skin bleaching products contain corticosteroids, which can disrupt the hormonal balance in the body, leading to a range of health problems.

Addiction

Some people become addicted to skin bleaching products, and they use them excessively, leading to more serious health problems.

Psychological effects

The use of skin bleaching products can also have psychological effects on users. Some people develop low self-esteem and feelings of inadequacy, leading to mental health problems.
