How to tackle Body Odour

Time to have that Cinderella and Prince charming moment, going from drab to fabulous in no time just by getting rid of the smelly pits, and engaging in odourless tips below.

Humans naturally sweat either from performing physical activities for instance, walking under the sun, or when in a warm environment. So, it is completely normal to sweat.

This is the bodys natural way of regulating its temperature, but the awful smell that accompanies sweat can be very embarrassing.

Sweat on its own is generally odourless, the unpleasant smell is as a result of the bacteria that build up on your sweaty skin, reacts with sweat and oils to grow and multiply rapidly, break down protein and fatty acids, thus, causing body odour in the process.

Take Regular shower/baths – to keep yourself squeaky clean, use anti-bacterial soap since they are designed and have proven to remove odour-causing bacteria.

Focus on washing areas that are susceptible to sweating such as the underarms and feet. Wrap off by drying yourself thoroughly to prevent bacteria from breeding on the skin.

The use of antiperspirants perspiration reduces the amount of sweat, while deodorants mask the smell of odour-causing bacteria.

To help avoid body smell, use a combination of antiperspirant/deodorant in the morning and before bed time to reduce and manage odour. See your doctor if you cannot get a product that works best for you.

Armpits hairs slow down the evaporation of sweat, giving the bacteria more time to break down in to smelly substances. Regular shaving has been found to help BO control in that area.

  • Towel off well- Dry yourself completely after bathing and pay close attention to any areas where you sweat more. Its harder for bacteria to breed on a skin thats dry.
Watch your diet – you are what you eat- Food like hot pepper tends to make you sweat, while onions and garlic which contain an aroma can be carried in ones sweat. Caffeinated beverages and alcohol may intensify the sweating, and cause to bacteria to breed. Do yourself a favour and watch what you eat by always maintaining a healthy and balanced diet.

Wear breathable clothes -The type of clothes you choose to wear can affect how much you sweat. Settle for natural-made fibers with better breathability such as cotton, silk and wool to allow air to enter your fabrics thereby keep sweat from building up. Workouts are best in moisture-wicking, synthetic materials as they may be able to keep the sweat off your skin. Bacteria cannot grow or multiply on your skin if you sweat less. Never forget to change your socks, bras, underwear and remember to wear breathable sneakers to prevent foot odor as well. If your feet are prone to sweat, just switch your footwear from time to time in order to allow them to dry completely before wearing them again. Try walking around barefoot, to allow your feet to breathe especially if you wear covered shoes.

Used clothes are breeding ground for bacteria to accumulate and foul smell can stick when they are not properly washed. Be sure to do your laundry so, that unpleasant odour-causing bacteria does not stick.

Regular washing of hands – can help gain great-smelling, long-lasting protection against odour for up to 24 hours and if all fails, then its time to see a professional.

Finally, the easiest way of keeping the body odour at arms length is by maintaining proper hygiene in order to prevent bacteria build up.
