Review of “Babalawo Reloaded The Drum” Collection by Luxus Craft: A Fusion of Tradition and Global Luxury

Attending the private fashion event in Abuja on June 9, 2023, was an experience that lingered long after the final model left the runway.

The room buzzed with an energy that only grew as the night progressed, culminating in the much-anticipated debut of Luxus Craft’s latest collection, “Babalawo Reloaded The Drum.” As the lights dimmed and the first model appeared, it became immediately apparent that the fashion designer, Chidinma Favour Chinda had created something truly special—something that resonated far beyond the confines of the event.

From the moment the first model took the stage, it was clear that Chinda’s vision extended beyond mere fashion. The model, draped in a minimalist black ensemble that served as a canvas, carried a striking red leather bag that immediately caught the eye.

The bag, with its bold colour and intricate cowrie adornments, was not just an accessory but a statement piece. It spoke volumes about the designer’s ability to blend the old with the new, the traditional with the contemporary.

The cowries, sourced from Lafia, Nasarawa State, weren’t just decorative—they were symbolic, a nod to the rich Yoruba heritage and its spiritual significance. In that moment, it felt as though Chinda was inviting us to see fashion not just as clothing but as a means of storytelling, as a way to connect with our roots while stepping confidently into the future.

The collection continued to impress as the next model, exuding a grounded strength, walked out with a deep brown version of the same bag.

The contrast between the luxurious brown leather and the gleaming white cowries was striking, creating a visual harmony that was both subtle and impactful. What stood out to me was the quality of the leather—soft yet durable, rich in colour, and unmistakably high-end.

It was fascinating to learn that this leather was sourced from Kano, the same region where luxury powerhouses like Louis Vuitton procure their materials. This detail alone underscored the fact that Luxus Craft is playing on a global stage, utilizing materials that are synonymous with luxury and prestige worldwide.

But the bags were only part of the story. The shoes in the collection were equally impressive, each pair showcasing a different facet of Chinda’s design prowess. One model, with a poised and elegant demeanour, wore sleek black leather shoes that oozed sophistication.

The shoes were minimalist in design but carried a sense of luxury that was undeniable. They were the kind of shoes that could easily transition from a boardroom in Lagos to a red carpet in Paris, embodying a versatility that is essential for any brand looking to make its mark internationally.

On the other end of the spectrum were the sandals, worn by a model who exuded a laid-back, effortless charm. The sandals, with their crisscrossing black leather straps, were a masterclass in understated elegance. They were simple, yes, but in the best possible way—practical, stylish, and perfect for the modern, global citizen.

As the model moved down the runway, there was a palpable sense of ease and comfort that radiated from the footwear, a reminder that luxury doesn’t always have to be ostentatious; it can be quietly confident, knowing its worth without the need to shout.

As the models continued to showcase the collection, I couldn’t help but feel that this was more than just a fashion show. It was a celebration of African heritage, reimagined for a global audience.

The use of cowries, with their deep cultural and spiritual significance in Yoruba tradition, was a masterstroke. They were integrated into the designs in a way that felt both respectful and innovative, bridging the gap between the past and the present. It’s this kind of thoughtful design that has the potential to resonate with audiences far beyond Nigeria, positioning Luxus Craft as a brand with serious global appeal.

The audience’s reaction was a testament to the collection’s impact. There was a collective murmur of appreciation as each piece was unveiled, a recognition that we were witnessing something significant. The “Babalawo Reloaded The Drum” collection didn’t just showcase beautiful designs—it told a story, one that was deeply rooted in African culture but with a vision firmly set on the global stage. It was a reminder that African fashion has the power to influence, to inspire, and to lead, not just locally but internationally.
As I left the event, the thought that stayed with me was how well-positioned Luxus Craft is to go global. Chidinma Favour Chinda has not only demonstrated an exceptional talent for design but also a keen understanding of what it takes to succeed in the highly competitive world of luxury fashion. By sourcing high-quality materials from the same regions as luxury giants like Louis Vuitton, and by integrating cultural elements in a way that is both authentic and innovative, she has set Luxus Craft on a path that could very well lead to international acclaim.

In a world where the lines between local and global are increasingly blurred, Luxus Craft stands out as a brand that is not only rooted in its cultural identity but also poised to make a significant impact on the global fashion scene. The “Babalawo Reloaded The Drum” collection is a powerful statement of what Luxus Craft represents—a perfect blend of tradition and modernity, quality and creativity, all wrapped up in a package that is undeniably luxurious. I am confident that this is just the beginning for Luxus Craft, and I eagerly await to see how Chinda and her brand will continue to evolve and make their mark on the world stage.
